Man Transported In Air
But Is Far From Flyinc

j miB; us ioucn is light and gen
tie; those unsteady folks who
could be knocked over with a
feather ' arc really in a bad
-.r. nidi oia proverb is mean
ingless, but it's Sllnnnsorf (n !,);
cate how unstable we are at the
time. But the feather itself is
more complicated than a casual
uuaervauon would indicate.
-There are of course, several
kinds of feathers, even on the
same bird, and all cleverly de
signed to serve a specific pur
pose. The bird itself the crea-
lure tnai grows the feathers, is
a highly specialized piece of ap.
f?" awa. even us Dones are
umereni irom other animals,
they are hollow instead of being
filled with marrow. Contributing
. to extreme lightness without
sacrificing strength, thev are
ajr-wuea.
Within the body of the bird
. is a complicated chemical
mcchanism that grows feathers
instead ot hair, and is so ar
ranged that the feathers are
shed, or moulted in its wings;
strong, but still with great flex
ibility; tail feathers are simi
lar. Too, most birds have under
feathers, under other feathers;
those that round out the bird's
body are called contour feath
ers; under these are the deli
cately fine, fluffy feathers call
ed "down." These lack the
stiffening shaft, or vane of the
tail or flight feathers, and have
practically no weight at all;
they insulate the bird's body
against heat and cold.
Immature Feathers
Pinfeathers are the immature
feathers that the bird starts off
with shortly after emerging
from the egg. Pinfeathers de
velop from the bird's skin, from
tiny pits, and are ted with blood
and nourishment. When the pin
feather becomes a fully devel
oped feather the blood supply is
automatically cut off, and the
feather, although still attached
to the skin, is lifeless and capa
ble of no further growth. They
have no nerve, and no feeling.
-. Prick a pinfeather and the bird
jumps, injure an adult feather
, and the bird feels no pain, no
sensation.
Nature took many things into
consideration when, she arrang
ed the moulting of feathers from
a bird'd body. She, Mother Na
ture, designed these not so sim
ple objects we call feathers, to
be moulted only when new ones
were ready to replace the old,
so that the gird would not ex
perience a single interval when
flight was impossible. Those
birds whose wing feathers are
shed, as in some of the water
fowl, must hide themselves dur
ing the time new flight feathers
are forming.
Specialized Organs
Of course, a bird is a biped;
so are we, and actually the bird
flies by waving what in the hu
man animal would be its arms;
and the wings, like our arms,,
are highly specialized organs.
With its feathers, its hollow,
air-filled bones, and its stream
lined body, the bird accomplish
es something toward which man
has always aspired free and
easy flight. We constantly brag
about our ability to fly, an utter I
ly ridiculous statement.
Watch a sea gull soar over
head, or come to rest on the
sand without a sound or a trem
or, or a song bird come to a
graceful stop on a swaying tree
branch. Compare these mo
tions with the thunderous and
prolonged rush of an airplane,
and you cannot honestly say, j
that man can fly. Just because;
a man operates an airplane, or
rides in one, doesn't make him j
n flyer; man has not come anyj
closer to flying than has a rab-i
bit, or a puppy dog. The fact is ;
he never will fly; he isn't built i
that way. But he proudly says,
"I just flew in from," or "I fly
wherever I go." If human ego
was a wing, or even a handful
of flight feathers, he would have
something to "flap about."
