Have Idea You Can Win
Them All, Al Akins Tells
SM Gridders at Banquet
Always come up with the
idea that you can win them
all," Al Akins, Southern Ore
eon College head football coach,
declared here last night.
Akins was main speaker at
the annual dinner honoring St.
Mary's High School football
players and coaches and rally
squad members.
Fullback Jeff Randolph and
Guard John Lucas were an
nounced as co-recipients of the
outstanding player award for
the 1963 season. Presentation of
the award was made by the
Very Rev. Carl Mai, pastor of
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
parish.
Akins, discussing the "hidden
values" found in football, listed
as one of the values the search
for excellence and said, "I do
not accept the philosophy ot
'you can't win them all'." The
Red Raider mentor, supporting
philosophy that "you can win
them all," maintained that play
ers should not be satisfied with
mediocre performance, that they
should put forth the effort and
strive to win and strive for excellence.
Other Values
Values from football listed by
Akins were lasting friendships,
building of character; release
of energy in a harmless way;
sense of responsibility, loyalty
and community spirit, or esprit
de corps; pride in well-being
and physical fitness; learning to
compete without quitting; in
tense competition; ability to
face failure, problems and re
sponsibilities and respect for
authority through imposed and
self-discipline.
Sometimes ' you learn more
from losing," Akins said. He
declared that .in football it is
not the color of a man's skin
that matters but that is per
formance that counts. He point
ed out that not all men can be
scientists, that some have to
carry the guns and take the
punishment in this country's de
fense and that athletes make
the best soldiers.
I think there really is
need," Akins said, "to under
stand the value of athletics."
He asked, "Are we getting our
money's worth when we spend
money for football?," and de
clared that the hidden values
should be searched for.
Winner All the Way
The Rev. John Keane, St.
Mary's principal, spoke of his.
the school's and the parents' de
sire to "have a winner all the
way across the board." He
brought out that just playing to
be a winner in sports is not
enough and that striving to be
a winner should carry over into
other fields, as well.
Bill Renshaw was chairman
of the dinner and presided at
it. Bud Parsons was master of
ceremonies. Letter awards were
presented by Coach Bill McKib
bin who also livened the eve
ning by making a number of
"goof off" awards.
Father Mai praised McKibbin
for developing fine character as
well as good players and teams

SF Warriors'
'Homecoming'
Spoiled 106-102
PHILADELPHIA (UPI)-The
San Francisco Warriors had a
"homecoming" here Tuesday
night but it was spoiled by the
Philadelphia 7 6 e r s , another
transplanted National Basket
ball Association team.
The Warriors, returning to the
city they left two years ago in
a franchise shift, were edged
106-102 in an overtime game by
the 76ers, formerly the Syracuse
Nats. It was the only game
scheduled in the NBA Tuesday
night.
The game had another nostal
gic touch since Alex Hannum,
San Francisco coach, is the for
mer mentor of the Syracuse
Nats.
Hannum said the situation led
to an inspired and "well-played"
ball game but to the Warriors'
Guy Rodgers, who was a colle
giate star at Temple University
here, it was just another road
game. This despite the fact that
his family was in the stands.

crowd turned out to see the Ar

Calhoun's main ring maneu
ver is a "belly squasher" in
which he comes down with all
of his weight on a prostrate
opponent. If he gets the chance
to apply it in the tag match,
Gorky and Vachon might be
sorry they asked to team up
against Calhoun and his pal, the
clever New Zealander.
A match which would be a
main event on any other card
will send wild Bill Savage
against Nick Bockwinkle, coast
junior heavyweight king. It will
be a non-title scrap but Savage
hopes a win will force Bock
winkle to put his title on the
line in a return match.
Nick Kozak, who learned the

users of the maneuver, will at
