American Bald Eagle Flies
Off Into Invisible Distance
We who are alive today can
see if we care to look at the
passing of that majestic em
blem of American freedom, the
bald eagle.
The wild scream of this great
bird is1 growing fainter with
every passing month. It's a rare
occurrence now to look up into
the blue depths of the sky and
see the soaring flight of that
graceful bird which symbolizes
' so graphically the spirit of free
dom of America ... a living
emblem of our national inde
pendence. But a few short years ago
within a radius of 20 miles of
my home, I could count a cou
ple of dozen huge stick nests.
Today only a single nest re
gains in the same area.
There have been many con
tributing causes for the de
crease. Expanding city limits
have engulfed the wild places
where the birds nested; there
are also more people with more
guns and less consideration for
our vanishing wildlife; forest
and brush fires; high winds;
and many other causes, all
seemingly teamed up to harass
the few remaining eagles. Prob
ably, in nearly all the areas
where the bald eagle was once
common, this same condition
exists. .
Long Babyhood
Unfortunate, too, and helping
to hasten the end, is the long
period of babyhood of the
eagles, as the young remain in
the nest and insist on standing
on the outer edge where their
heads and shoulders show plain
ly against the sky. The tree
where the nest is usually lo
cated is often standing alone,
selected by the parent birds be
cause it is isolated but neverthe
less plainly visible to all eyes.
Human nature being what it
is, the nest is too often dis
turbed or destroyed, or visited
too frequently by curious folks,
until the parent birds give up
in disgust. And too, the young
eagles never reach adult stage
where they are "bald," as only
adult eagles have the white
head feathers that give -them
the appearance of being bald.
The mature bald eagle reaches
this adulthood at the end of
three or four years.
Being particularly fond of
fish, the American bald eagle
prefers to live near the sea
coast, or close by some other
large body of water. The nests
are usually within sight of the
lake or the sea. With its appe
tite for fish and its relishing
either fresh or salt water fish
caught live, or which are dead
and cast up on a shore, the
eagle brings back to its nest
many fishing plugs and lures
lost by the human fisherman
who hooked the fish but never
landed it. These objects become
residue, left on the nest plat
form, and rei. ain there until
they are blown away by the
wind or buried by a new layer
of sticks in the following year.
Larger Than Male
The female American bald
eagle often attains a wing
spread of seven or more feet,
somewhat larger than the male.

ple must feel sorry to see them
go, one by one, off into the m-

But few of us are conscious
or deeply enough concerned
with their final disappearance
Residents Warned
On Faulty Heating
PORTLAND (UPI)-The Ore
gon Board of Health has warn. 1
that faulty home heating
systems and automobile exhaust
are the cause of many deaths
each year.
The board warned homeown
ers and motorists to check their
systems for escape of carbon
monoxide gas.
Dr. R. H. Wilcox, state health
officer, said the instance of car
bon monoxide poisoning is high
er during the winter months.
The gas has no odor and no
color, he said.
Early symptoms are nauseau,
dizziness and headache, he said,

ted to other causes. The sym
toms are soon followed by un
consciousness and eventually
death, he said.
