MOST OK OUR FOOD IS SAFE
Because these days so many
housewives are frightened by
scary articles in the maga
zines, I am glad when I read
in medical and scientific jour
nalls that tests of our foods
in government laboratories usu
ally fail to show any signifi
cant contamination with either
fallout strontium or pesticides.
For instance, a couple of
months ago I read in the "Jour
nal" of the AMA that "The
latest results of the Food and
Drug Administration's 'total
diet' studies have again con
firmed the safety and high nu-
tritive value of the American
food supply." The experts said
that the strontium-90 content
of food from fallout is still well
within safe limits; in fact, in
some places, even near the
bombing sites in Nevada, no
strontium 'could be found in
milk. Obviously, there is no
need for anyone to panic. The
experts also measured in foods
pesticide residue, and conclud
ed that the amounts of them are
well within safe limits.
And here is another ' state
ment that all mothers of grow
ing children should read: the
experts said that many foods
as bought "contain ample quan
tities of vitamins." Today the
food and drug people are warn
ing us that there are many men
going about making much
money by scaring the mothers
of families into buying many
dollars' worth of vitamins and
food-adclitives. The salesmen
claim that unless the additives
are used, the woman's loved
ones will fall ill with some de
ficiency disease. Our national
experts say that this is bunk,
and they are beginning to go
after the salesmen and to con
fiscate their false advertise
ments. I often say that 70 years ago,
when I was a boy, my mother
had never heard of vitamins
they had not yet been dis
covered but nevertheless all
of us five children grew sev
eral inches taller than our par
ents; we all grew up well and
strong, and four of us have
lived long. .

Police Said Afraid
Of Becoming Toads
DENVER (UPI) - A woman
called the city attorney's office
Wednesday to report that her
landlady, a voodoo practitioner,

of her hair in a green hollow
tree.
Asst. Dist. Atty. Richard

said.
Other Research
Other research organizations
in the United States, notably the
U. S. Forest Products Labora
tory, Madison, Wis., are devel
oping basic information on the
effects of fire on chemically
treated wood.
OSU's study on fire-retardant
treated wood began five years
ago. About 1,300 small Douglas
fir beams were divided into
two groups one under normal
storage conditions and the
other in not-dry conditions
similar to those existing in the
Southwest U.S.
Forest Research Laboratory
personnel broke some of the
beams in tests after storage
periods of 1 and 3 years. Re
maining beams will be tested
for breaking and bending at the
end of 6 and 10 years.
Combined data for 1 and 3
year storage periods show no
practical difference between
treated and untreated wood.
Preparing New Tests
The Laboratory is now pre
paring to conduct strength
tests on fire-retardant treated
commercial size Douglas fir
lumber.
Research has helped to accel
erate the acceptance of chemically-treated
wood by building
code officials for the construc
tion of fire-safe buildings. This

Uniform Building Code and Die
National Board of Fire Under
writers permits wood to com
pete with other structural ma
terials classified as non-combustible.
A 50 per cent increase in the
volume of fire-retardant treated
wood used in building construc
tion during 1960-61 indicates
architects, engineers and build
ing officials now are able to
designate this chemically-treated
wood in almost all types of
construction, Graham noted.
