Admiration for
Vote Interpreters

or each election there comes a
period of what is known in po
litical circles as "analyzing ine
returns."
'The ballots we cast don't just
sDeak for themselves, you
know. In order for us to under
stand why we voted the way
we did, somebody has got to sit
down and figure out what we
meant when we voted tnat way.
I have great admiration for
election interpreters, mainly be
cause 1 have never oeen aDie
to master that art myself. But
I keen on Irving lust the same.
In the wake of the elections
this week, I approached a
friend of mine who specializes
in interpretations and asked
him to give me a few pointers.
Says It's Easy
"It's quite simple really, once
you get the hang of it. When
issues are involved you analyze
the politicians and when poli
ticians are involved you analyze
the issues. Got it?"
"I think so," I said. "Would
you mind giving me an exam
ple?" "Very well. Take the mayor
alty election in Philadelphia.
A Democrat named James H.
J. Tate defeated a Republican
named James T. McDermott.
How would you interpret that?"
"Could it mean that a major
ity of the voters felt that Tate
would be a better mayor than
McDermott.'
:"Good heavens!" my friend
exclaimed, you do need help
"Well, then, maybe it means
that Philadelphia voters are
prejudiced in favor of candi
dates with two middle initials."
"You are trying to analyze
the politicians, my friend said.
"What this election provides
is an opportunity to analyze the
political impact of the civil
rights issue."
Tries Another
"I think I'm catching on," I
said. "Try me on another one."
'All right, in New York uty,
the voters went on record 3 to
1 in favor of legalizing off-track
betting on horse races. Let's
see how you analyze that."
"I analyze it to mean that
three out of every four New
Yorkers are in favor of legaliz
ing off-track betting," I said.
'Now you are trying to
analyze the issue," my mentor
commented. "This one should
be interpreted as a political vic
tory for Mayor Wagner."

According to my analysis of
the returns, the odds against a
New York horse being elected
mayor of Philadelphia on a civ
il rights platform are 3 to 1,
off-track.

Fireman's Ball Set
In Jacksonville
Jacksonville The an
nual Fireman's ball sponsored
by the Jacksonville Volunteer
firemen will be held Saturday,
Nov. 30, at the Jacksonville
Community Hall.
Proceeds from the dance will
be used to purchase equipment
for the fire department. Fire
men earn money from other ac
tivities during the year, but the
majority of the funds are re
ceived each year from the ball.
The dance will be held from
9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Third Continuance
Won at Klamath
KLAMATH FALLS (UPI)
Slaying suspect Archie Foster
won a third continuance of his
case in Klamath County Circuit
Court Wednesday.
His attorney, Charles Burt of
Salem, requested and received
an indefinite delay until the Or
egon Supreme Court acts on a
writ of mandamus.
Foster, 41, is charged with
first degree murder in the slay
ing of Eunice Biss at Beatty
last July.
Eisenhower's
Book Published
WASHINGTON (UPI)-"Ma&
date for Change", the first in
stallment of Dwight D. Eisen
hower's memoirs of his White
House years, was published to
dayanother landmark in the
former president's highly suc
cessful literary career.
The 650-page book has been
chosen as a selection of the
Literary Guild Book Club. Ad
vance installments have ap
peared serially in a number of
major newspapers over the past
few weeks. Both of these fac
tors almost insure it will be a
best-seller, perhaps on a scale
equaling that of his first book,
"Crusade in Europe."
It was the enormously popu
lar "Crusade in Europe" that
gave Eisenhower a measure of
financial independence. The
proceeds from that book wnt
toward purchase of his farm at
Gettysburg, Pa., the first home
he has owned after years of
living on Army posts around
the world.
Eisenhower deals with the
first term of his eight-year
(1953-61) administration in the
current book. The second term
will be covered in another vol
ume planned for publication
late next year.
The early critical consensus
on "Mandate for Change" ap
peared to be that while the for
mer president has described the
great and momentous events of
his first four years in the White I
House, he just as carefully has
omitted all of the colorful de-l
tails. The meat is there, but the
juice is gone. j
