College Aid Bill
Approval Expected
WASHINGTON (UPI) - A
compromise $1.2 billion "bricks
and mortar!' college aid con
struction bill appeared today to
be headed toward relatively
easy House approval.
The measure, expected to
hav& a somewhat rougher time
in the Senate, would authorize
a three-year program of federal
grants and loans for construc
tion of college classrooms, li
braries and laboratories.
As the college bill started
through its last legislative ob
stacles, House-Senate conferees
began work on the tougher prob
lem of reconciling differences in
vocational education aid bills.
The House passed a five-year
bill quadrupling the present $57
million yearly aid payment for
job training schools.
But the Senate provided a
five-fold boost and also added
the authority to extend the 1958
National Defense Education Act
and increase its college student
loan program and to carry on
the politically popular "impact
ed areas" aid program for
schools crowded by the children
of federal workers and service
men. AMOROUS WOMAN
NEW LONDON, Conn. (UPI)
John Brown Jr. complained
to police Sunday that a middle
aged woman followed him out
of a local store, tugged him
into an alley and then threw
her arms around him.
Brown said that he "resisted
her advances" and pushed her
away.
When she was gone, he found
that his wallet, containing $83,
was missing.

Wilson School celebrated Na
tionl Lunch Week, as did
schools all over the nation. The
cafeteria at Wilson provided
special Halloween treats for the
students. More than 300 chil
dren per day eat hot lunches
provided by the Wilson cafe
teria. Class room construction at
Wilson is progressing wi t h
speed. Interior cabinets and
lavatories are finished. Heat
ing units and folding doors will
be installed within the next
three weeks. Principal Robert
Baccus states that the students
will probably move into the new
rooms by the first of the year.
Two temporary classrooms are
being used at Wilson until the
new wing of rooms is complet
ed. There are four new rooms
which were especially built for
team teaching. The rooms will
be separated by folding doors
which can be opened to make
two larger rooms. The teacher's
office and , wookroom will be
in the center.
The first grades of Wilson
are learning to write and are
starting their phonics and their
color names. Mrs. Virgina Fer
guson s room went on a field
trip and wrote about it. Mrs.
Alice Brown's room1 made por
traits of themselves, and Mrs.
Marjorie Shelton's room made
seed charts and one student
brought a large sunflower.
Mrs. Mc Daniel's room made
seed pictures to look, like flow
ers and in art work, made cats
for Halloween. ,
All the second grades are
studying the parts of plants
and trees.
Mrs. Jane Snodgrass' room
has made trees in art, and Mrs.
Roberta Nichols' room has
made cut paper flowers to
show what they are studying.
Mrs. Joyce Sideras' room has
been making a poster about
"What Food Does for Us" to
be put up in the cafeteria.
They have also collected seeds
for their bulletin board.

studying about streets and
roads by finding out where
they live and putting it on a
bulletin board.
The fourth grade has been
studying about weather. The
children in Mrs. Dorothy Mor
ris' class have made some
weather instruments and an in
teresting bulletin board showing
different types of weather.
Mrs. Freda Pteerson's class
has made a weather chart and
are putting the temperature
and other things about the
weather in it every day, and
Missv Westover's clas has made
and colored some maps of the
Northwest, North America and
the world.
The fifth graders are study
ing Latin America in geography.
Russell Carr's room, the 5 C's
are using the library tempor
arily while waiting for their new
classrooms.
Mrs. Barbara Doolen's room
is doing beautiful art work in a
crayon resist medium. Mr.
Gaulke, a new teacher, has
some interesting maps. We
have added another fifth grade
because of so many students.
This year finds the sixth
graders in new rooms. Mrs
Ruth Kaye has taken over Mr.
Carr's old room and Vernal
Goodrich has taken over the
right hand cottage.
Mrs. Kaye has started the
SRA accelerated reading pro
gram in the fifth and sixth
grades. An attractive bulletin
board also displays some of
her student s art. Mr. Good
rich says he likes the cottages
and so does his students.
New teachers at Wilson
School this year are Miss West
over, fourth grade; Mr. Gaulke,
fifth and sixth grades; Mrs. Mc
Daniel, first grade; Miss Bench,
third grade; and deplacing Mrs.
Jensen in the thud grade is
Mrs. Holland.
We have been fortunate at
Wilson to have associate teach
ers who are doing a good job
helping students and teachers.
Working part days in the var
ious rooms are Miss Stevens
in Mrs. Kaye's room, Miss
Williams in Mrs. Kaye's room,
Mrs. Hulshpf in Mr. Carr's
room, Mr. Mobley in Mr. Care's
room, Miss Clark in Mrs. Mee's
room and Miss Bell in Mrs.
Mee's room.
Mrs. Barbara Doolcn is in
charge of chorus and she re
ports that there are 80 members.
She has also started a small
chorus that call themselves the
Choralettes. Both groups will
make their first public ap
pearance Thursday, Nov. 14,
at Open House. The public is
invited to attend and we expect
an extra good turn out of par
ents. Football season will come to
a close with the playing of
Washington on Nov. 1. Al
though Wilson has not been a
high scorer in the games, Mr.
Carr is proud of the way the
boys have been working out.
Thirty-six turned out for foot
ball this season.
Mrs. Marian Montgomery's
room is full of new faces this
year. Many of her former stud'
ents are now attending cither
Hedrick or McLoughlin Junior
High bchool.
Five states are represented
by students in her room. They
are Oklahoma, Washington,

Dale Varner, art student, has
created a truly vivid model of
Disneyland. Dale used paper,
cardboard, plastic, wood and a
lot of imagination to create the
model. Dale hopes to sell his
project to Disneyland publicity
department.
Seniors are busy deciding
which pictures they want to
keep for themselves and which
one to put in the annual. Senior

We have three people new to
Howard this year. They are Joe
Williamson, Gary Heavilin, and
David Stengel.
We are learning about the In

Studies.
Class officers elected for the

to the student council.
Mr. Ouackenbush brought a
Venus fly trap to school so that
we could all see this unusual
plant. Each member of the class
was able to watch a leaf snap
shut when the sensitive hair
trigger on the leaf's surface was
touched by a pencil point. This
is how a fly gets caught.
Howard School had as guests
on Education-Business day four
local businessmen. Visiting
classes and touring the school
plant were Darrell Rolls from
Franklin Transfer and Storage;
Bruce Merickel from Harris,
Upham Company; R. E. Brown
from Harry and David; and
Bruce Marks from Household
Finance.
Serving as guides for the men
as they visited different classes
and activities were five sixth
grade girls Laurie Rawlins,
Sheila Beare, Joan Anders, Le-
neva Spires, and T a m a r a
Peery.
The businessmen were guesis
at lunch, which concluded the
day's activities.
Three new first grade pupils
have transferred to Howard
School. Cheryl Stengel came
from Jefferson, Naomi Charlton
from Lone Pine, and Rhonda
Beattv from Jackson.
Kraus-Weber tests and checks
on eyes and teeth have been
made to complete the individual
health records. We have finish
ed our First Grade Parent-
teacher conferences, and this
was followed by sending out the
first six-weeks report cards.
Our Halloween parties were
held during the last hour of the
day. The Room Mothers for
each room frunished treats and
we played Halloween games
and sang Halloween songs.
