Miss Wells Is IV
Homecoming Queen
CAVE JUNCTION - Miss
Linda Wells, a junior at Illinois
Valley High School, was crown
ed homecoming queen during
half-time of the IV-Phocnix foot
ball game Oct. 26. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Wells.
Miss Wells was selected by
vote of the football team. Rick
Fielder, a senior, presented the
crown.
Earlier in the day, the school
band, pep club and drill team
presented a parade down the
main street of the city.
The October, 1963, issue of Sunset magazine has an article
with two photos and a diagram concerning the Anderson Grade
Road in Siskiyou County, California. This is the road which
climbs along the ridge to the east of the Shasta River Canyon
between Hornbrook and Yrcka.
The title of the article is "For Back Road Collectors." It starts
off like this:
"In our rush to give the automobile wider and straighter high
ways, we have bypassed many picturesque old roads and closed
them forever. One of the rare survivors is a road called simply
the Anderson Grade, along the Klamath River in Northern Cali
fornia." Then the article goes on to relate how the road has re
mained pretty much the same for a century, and it tells the
reader how to find the road and what to watch for while driving
on it.
Well, the editors of Sunset were almost too late in getting this
article in print. For, from all present indications, the days of
the Anderson Grade are numbered. It has been recommended by
the California State Highway Engineer as the best route for the
Interstate 5 Freeway between Yreka and Hornbrook. The Cali
fornia Highway Commission hasn't officially adopted this as the
route as yet, but is expected to do so this month.
Different Philosophy
The new owners of the Mark Antony Hotel in Ashland (The
Hudspeth Sawmill Company of Prineville) are trying something
a little different. Instead of bringing in an experienced hotel man
to manage the place, they have brought in someone whose expert
ence is in other areas, In hopes of getting a fresh approach.
The new manager is Joe Palin, former city manager of Madras.
He held that post for nine years, then resigned a little over two
yean ago to go into the construction business. His background is
primarily in bookkeeping.

Ever faced by an address like lit. 3, box 405, Jacksonville and
wonder how to go about locating the house? There's a new map
out that not only shows all the rural routes but also lists which
box numbers are on which road, so that you can pinpoint prac
tically any rural address. We're finding it quite handy.
