Coup Is Staged in Viet- Nam

Mme. Ngo Nhu was in a $96

South Viet Nam government
staged a bloody coup to throw
out president Ngo Dinh Diem.
Whether the fiery "Dragon
Lady, with her husband con
sidered the real power in the
government, was still visiting
the United States by accident or
design when the coup broke out
was a matter ol speculation
She had been scheduled to re
turn to her country last week,
but extended her whirlwind trip
of the U. S. in order to "rest" in
Southern California.
Mme. Nhu said she "definite'
ly" felt the coup by marines,
paratroopers, the air force and
key units of the army was .in
cited and backed by Americans,
The U.S. catagorically denied it.
"Oh. definitely," s n e an
swered when asked whether she
felt the M.S. was behind the
coup. "No coup can develop
without American incitement
and American backing.
She said she had no plans of
staving in the U.S
"I cannot stay in a country
that stabbed me in the back,"
she told reporters when she left
for noon mass at the Church of
the Good Shepard on All Saints
Day.
"I believe all the devils of
Hell are against us," she said,
"But we will triumph."
She said her husband, power
ful Ngo Dinh Nhu, who had been
reported assassinated, had ex
pected the coup.
Elsewhere: There were these

Rafferty Bradcn: Thomas
Braden and Dr. Max Rafferty
were at odds over U.S. Supreme
Court decisions on God in the
public schools. Rafferty predict
ed future court decisions would
forbid "the very mention of
God" in public schools. Braden
commented, "Personally, I'm
sick and tired of the constant
misinterpretations of, Supreme

Freeway Completed
Through Redwoods

driving the Redwood Highway,
U. S. 101, can now travel 17 Vi
miles of uninterrupted fourlane
scenic freeway along the South
Fork of the Eel River, with
the opening recently of a new
section between Myers v m ana
Maple Hills Road bridge.
.' Contiguous sections to the
north and south also have the
construction under way, which
will eventually add another 14
miles of freeway to this part of
the route.
The new section added this
month is approximately 5Vi
miles long, costing more than
$7,000,000, or more than $1,
000,000 a mile. It crosses the
river on a new curving four
lane bridge at Myers Flat, and
avoids the big redwoods by
new alignment on Hie west
bank.
Four Lane Highway
The roadway is 60 feet wide
four lanes, divided by a lour
foot painted median.
The routing (or this section
of freeway was adopted in MSB
after years of studies conduct
ed in cooperation with the Male
Park Commission and ils staff.
The route as approved joint
ly by the Highway and Park
Commissions.
The new highway was located
across the river from the old
route, according to Stale High
way Engineer J. C. Womack,
in order to avoid the Nelson
Grove of the Humboldt Red
woods State Park.

Prison Strike: Sixty-eight con
victs at Folsom prison were sen
tenced to 29 days in solitary for
refusing to return to work with
about 1,000 other prisoners who
had staged a two-week strike
that prompted a brief sympathy
strike at San Quentin prison.
The convicts were protesting the
wage ralo for their work in
the prison, and lengthening of
terms behind bars for crimes
of violence.
Water Plan: The Attorney
General and the Metropolitan
Water District (MWD) in Los
Angeles added their protests to
growing opposition in California
to the $4 billion Pacific South
west Water Plan proposed by
Interior Secretary Stewart Udall.
Atty. Gen. Stanley Mosk, the
first high state official to speak
against the plan, said it would
turn Northern California into a
"water hole" for the entire Pa
cific Southwest. Udall's plan
would ship large amounts of wa
ter from the North to Southern
California and other dry areas.
The MWD, meantime, charged
the plan would give me icaerai
government "a substantial part"
of the state's water resources.
The MWD also objected to a
proposal to cut off shipments
from the Colorado River in lieu
of shipments from Northern Cal
ifornia. Fair Housing: Gov. Edmund
G. Brown and the President of
the California Real Estate Asso
ciation collided head en over the
association's attempt to nullify
the Rumford Fair Housing Law,
which bars discrimination in
about 60 to 70 per cent of all
hmisinff in the state. Brown
asked the real estate Industry to
halt its efforts to block tne law
by seeking a ballot proposition.

"Essentially," Womack add
ed, "our job is to save lives
and provide good traffic facili
ties, and thro are ninny defi
ciencies still remaining on the
Redwood Highway which must
be cr -reeled. This is a difficult
routo, through exceptionally
nigged terrain, and improve
ments are expensive."

tion show that the new section
of freeway will eliminate four
out of five accidents that would
have occurred on the old route.
Approximately 20 per cent of
the vehicles on this section ol
U. S. 101 are trucks.
The newly opened freeway
adds another sizable bypassed
section of the old route to the
nearby Avenue of the Giants.
The old sections of U. S. 101 arc
being retained for leisurely
travel by sightseers.

SPORTS?
At one time hi American his
tory, the forests were stocked
with a variety of game birds
and animals which the Indians
used at a prime source of food.
But to them hunting was not
regarded as a pleasure; to them
it was a vital necessity. Every
part of the slain animal was
used, not even the bones were
wasted. It was the white hunter
who caused the near extinction
of the buffalo in the western
par!, of tho United States.
The heath hen, last specimen
of which died on Martha's Vine
yard in 1932, is another splendid
example of man's powers of
ruthless extermination. These
game birds were long a target
for the guns of man, not to
mention the depletion they suf
fered from brush fires often
caused by man's gross negli
gence. Today hunting has turned into
a source of pleasure and has be
come a big money making
proposition. Huge sums arc
spent annually by ardent fol
lowers of the "sport," as it is
now called. The federal and
state governments are pres
sured into regulating hunting in
order to make it more attrac
tive and lasting to its devotees.
Is it a feather in Uncle Sam's
hat that, beside the heath hen,
passenger pigeon and American
eagle are becoming extinct,
many other native birds and
beasts are already well on their
way to extinction caused direct
ly by the sport of hunting?
The advertising and appeal to
our pre - tccnag-jra is not to be
ignored. Toy bows and arrows
and toy rifles are attached to
colorful cardboard pictures of
deer, ducks and bear. Minia
tures of these animals are pro
vided to make the play more
"realistic." The next step is to
go out and kill or maim a bird
or pet.
What hapens to the moral
and spiritual values of a nation
when these children become
adults? What is happening now
to the men and women who thus
snuff out life so lightly, then
grin and boast about it after
ward? The annual hunting season is
a gruesome business umbecom-
ina a gentleman and a Chris
tian. Some of the quietest,
peaceful mortals grow positive
ly bloodthirsty. Many are indis
criminate in their hunting and
end up killing a farmer's cow
or even one of their hunting
companions. Very little of the
animal life that falls before
their gunfire is converted into
food. Thus, a shamclul waste oi
money and irreplaceable lives
occurs all in the name of
"sport."
. Cub hunting is the vilest
"sport" of all. Baby foxes are
dug from their shelters and
thrown to packs of young hounds
to be torn to nieces. This is to
acquaint them with their prey
before the fox hunting proper
