Organization of a ski natrol as
unit of the National Ski Patrol
System is moving forward here
Under professional guidance in
anticipation of development of
the Mt. Ashland Ski area.
The Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol
was formed Oct. 31 at a meet
ing at the home of Richard
Brunswig, chairman of the
National Ski Patrol System in
the Northwest Region, who
moved to Medford from Eugene
in August.
Brunswig covers all the ski
areas. from Mt, Hood south, in
Oregon, in his ski patrol posi
tion. His major skiing in recent
years was done at Willamette
Pass and Bachelor Butte. Com
ing to Southern Oregon, he
quickly became one of the en
thusiastic supporters of develop
ment of the Mt. Ashland Rec
reation area.
Last Sunday the recently
tormeel nucleus of the Mt. Ash
land Ski Patrol organized a car
pool for an outing to Mt. Ash-1
lana. Members of the group
hiked the trails which have been
opened on the slopes of the
mountain.
Dan Bulkley, head track
coach at Southern Oregon Col
lege, led the hike, purpose of
which was to acquaint prospec
tive ski patrolmen with the area
that will be open to skiers this
winter.
Bulkley reported that the area
available this winter will be
only one third of the region
which wlil be ski territory once
the chair lift is installed. When
the facilities planned are com
pleted, Bulkley pointed out, the
Mt. Ashland Ski area will he
comparable to any in the northwest.

The area designated by the
U. S. Forest Service for the
development includes 800 acres.
The elevation varies from 5,500
to 7,333 feet on the northeast
side of Mt, Ashland.
Free of Boulders
The ground is free of lava
boulders. There are some large
and many small open glades.
Noted by the Sunday hikers
was the necessity for markers
to direct skiers back to the
lodge and away from the un
opened area, due to the pos
sibility of skiers going into the
area, becoming "hopelessly"
lost.
Ski patrolmen take their re
sponsibilities seriously, it was
emphasized to all the trainees.
The task of rescuing an injured
skier and rendering first aid is
not one for the untrained. A
ski patrolman must have com
pleted American Red Cross first
aid training, toboggan handl
ing and ski proficiency tests, as
well as additional hill training
after becoming a member,
whether he joins the patrol as
a volunteer or is hired as a pro
fessional. The learning process
never ceases, Lynn Waters,
public relations chairman of the
National Ski Patrol, has pointed
out in a review of the respon
sibilities to be assumed by patrols.
The officers of the National
Ski Patrol System supervise the
actions of Ski Patrols, instilling
in them the standards of better
performance. Good ski patrols
are always on the alert to co
operate with the ski area in
correcting unsafe conditions on
the slopes. Their primary re
sponsibility is rescue and first
aid but they do not confine their
service to this area.
Professionals and volunteers
are both unusually necessary to
a ski area. Few ski areas are
able to operate without volun
teers because of the number of
patrolmen needed to cover the
ski area adequately during peak
periods.
The purposes of the National
Ski Patrol System (NSPS) are
to serve the skiing public with
out charge in the rescue and
first aid treatment of injured
skiers: to promote safety and
courtesy in the sport of ski
ing; to serve ski area manage
ment as a trained and skillful
rescue organization; and to as
sist and cooperate with other
groups who are dedicated to
similar purposes.

The registered patrolmen are
divided into four classifications.
They are Junior Ski Patrolman,
15, 16 or 17 years of age; Local
Ski Patrolman, 18 years of age;
Senior Ski Patrolman, 18 years
of age and over; National Ski
Patrolman, a special appoint
ment awarded to senior patrol
men who have demonstrated
ability and leadership and who
have been registered for at
least three seasons.
In order to achieve register
ed membership, aspirants muU
meet minimum national re
quirements. All candid atcs
must fulfill whatever (raining
is required by the ski patrol
leader at the ski area whore he
desires to be a patrol in addi
tion to holding the current Red
Cross first aid cards.
He must demonstrate an at
titude during training which is
indicative of a good future Ski
Patrolman and remit registra
tion fees which are required.
To maintain annual registered
membership the patrol must,
during each ski season, com
plete a four-hour on-the-hill
practical refresher course.
Application Open
Application to membership in
the Ashland Ski Patrol is open
to any qualified skier who is
holder of both a standard and
advanced first aid card, officers
of the newly formed chapter
emphasized. Classes for a
standard course arc being held
at the Red Cross building in
Medford.

regarding the ski patrol organi
zation is advised to contact

Johnson of Ashland, assistant
Ski Patrol leader, or Marjo Si
monsen, secretary - treasurer
of the club.
The next meeting of the new
organisation will be held in the
home of Betty Ramsey, pub
licity chairman, at 720 E. Jack
son St.,Medford, at 7:30 p. m.
Wednesday, Nov.13. The meet
ing will be open to all interested
applicants.
Belton Won't Fill
Four Vacant Jobs
SALEM (UPI) -State Trea
surer Howard Belton said today
he would not fill four vacant po
sitions in his office, but other
wise planned no budget reduc
tions. The Finance and Administra
tion Department cannot cut the
treasurer's budget. Budgets of
constitutional offices secre
tary of state, governor, treasur
er, courts or the legislature do
.not come under allotment con
trol. Belton said the budget ap
proved for his department by j
the legislature didn't contain i
any fat. He said he had to
maintain his present staff to
maintain the required level of i

Both the governor and se-ie-lary
of state announced they
would make reductions in their
budgets after voters rejected the
income tax increase at the Oct.
15 election.
Man Found Guilty
Of Slaying Brother
KLAMATH FALLS (UPI) - A
Klamath County Circuit Court
jury found John Wesley Dean,
57, guilty of second degree mur
der after two hours of delibera
tion Thursday.
Dean was accused in the fatal
stabbing of his brother, Hagan,
37, here July 22. Hagan Dean
died five days later.
Judge Donald A. W. Piper
set sentencing for Mondayi The
jury voted 11-1 for the verdict.
