Southern Oregon
Tackles Chico in
Homecoming Tilt
ASHLAND Don't be fooled i Raiders. A sizable crowd is an-
by their record.
That is what Cuach Al Akins
has warned his Red Raiders of
Rogue about their Saturday
Homecoming football opposition.
Southern Oregon College's
Raiders engage the Wildcats of
Chico State at 1:30 p.m. tomor
row at Fuller Field here. This
will be non-league competition.
The Raiders have finished con
ference play.
Chico reportedly has a 1-6
record while SO is 4-2. But, the
Wildcat mark is attributed to
the high caliber of competition
rather than the lack of football
talent. Several Chico losses have
been by close margins. Sacra
mento State, leader of the Far
Western Conference, to which
SOC once belonged, nosed the
'Cats last week by a slim 9-6.
A Few Changes
Akins has made a few changes
for the Raiders this week in the
wake of the loss to Portland
State which virtually assured
the Oregon Collegiate mantle
for the Vikings. l
The mentor has said he may
use some shotgun offensive
plays in effort to give Raider
backs a jump on Wildcat de
fenders. Freshman Jim Calhoun is
slated to see duty, spelling Bill
Bailey at quarterback. Calhoun,
from St. Mary's High of Medford
was a Shrine all-star player and
Catholic athlete of the yea r.
He's been out of action much
of the season, injuring an ankle
in the Weber State encounter.
Tomorrow's game is the next
to the last of the season for the
ticipated because of returning
grads.

of upsetting each other, collide
here Saturday with the home
town Beavers slight favorites.
Despite the resurgent Indians'
24-14 victory over Notre Dame
and Oregon State's 31-8 drubbing
by Syracuse last week, odds
makers favor Oregon State by
four points.
Two years ago a slightly fa
vored Oregon State eleven was
drubbed by Stanford here 35-0.
That, incidentally, was the last
time the Beavers have lost a
game at Corvallis. They've won
seven straight here since.
Beavers Won in 1962
Last season Stanford, fresh
trom an upset victory over
Coach John Ralston, whose
Indians are now 2-4, said he
would use the same starting
lineup that shocked the Fight
ing Irish. It is sprinkled with
Oregon boys.
Dick Ragsdale of Medford is
the starting left halfback and
Center Marv Harris and end
Bob Burke hail from Coos Bay.
The Coos Bay Burke is no re
lation to Oregon State's pass-
snatching end, Vern Burke.
Oregon State has a 4-2 sea
son's record.
Beaver officials figure on a
crowd of about 15,000. The
Game starts at 1:30 p.m. PST.

gentina in his last fight on Oct.
21 while Casey has been idle
since the spring of 1962.
Beaver President
Not Very Optimistic
PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) -
President Arch Kingsley of the
Portland baseball club is "not
very optimistic" about the Bea
vers' future.
The Kansas City Athletics
Wednesday canceled "with re
gret" their working agreement
with Portland. The Beavers also
are not certain of a place to
play next season because Mult
nomah Stadium where they nor
mally pertqrm is for sale.
Portland's future in the PCL
probably will be decided at the
minor league meetings in San
Diego Dec. 1-3.
'I don't know where we can
go from here. All we can do
right now is sit tight and see
what the majors decide to do,"
Kingsley said.
WOW Girls
Pettycoat
Champions
ASHLAND - The "WOW
Girls" from Cascade Hall de
feated the "Slippery Susies"
from Susanne Homes Hall 28 to
14 in the Pettycoat Bowl game
played on Fuller field Thursday
afternoon as the SOC Homecom
ing moved through its first day's
activities.
It was a hard fought game,
even in masculine language,
and drew the comment that
"They should have worn foot
ball uniforms." Two girls were
carried off the field for injuries.
Two coaches, Jess Ballard and
Jack Breirkhoffer, prepared the
WOWS for the conflict and Den
nis Jones coaches the Slippery
Susies.
During half time Mary Jo
Batzer of Medford was crowned
Homecoming Queen. The crown
was placed on her head by last
year's Homecoming Queen Gay
Schweibert. "
Bockwinkle
Catches Up
With Borne
Nick Bockwinkle caught up
with Tough Tony Borne and took
his coast junior heavyweight
championship title away from
him in wrestling action at the
Medford Armory last night.
The two were locked into the
ring for their showdown as
chicken wire was spread around
the ropes to prevent a reoccur
rence of the shenanigans that
took place when the two tangled
two weeks ago.
On that occasion Borne left
the ring and Bockwinkle chased
him, only to be smashed to the
floor and lose the match.
Bockwinkle then challenged
Borne to put his title on the
line in a rematch with the
chicken wire enclosure. It was
for two out of three falls, with
no time limit.
Upper Hand
The champ got the upper hand
at fi-st, getting the first fall.
But Bockwinkle roared back and
thumped Tough Tony to the mat
twice to snatch the title away.
The outcome met with popular
acclaim, and Borne stayed on
in the ring for a few minutes
to exchange insults with the
crowd.
In the top preliminary match,
Nick Kozak fought an uphill
struggle but overcame Maurice
"Mad Dog" Vachon.
The pattern was similar to
that of the main event. Mad
Dog knocked Kozak around the
ring early in the match, scoring
the first fall. But the crowd fav
orite came back to get the next
two.
LAUREL TELEVISED
NEW YORK (UPI) - The

ternational at Laurel, Nov. 11,
will be televised by CBS from
4:30 to 5 p.m. EST.
Brothers May Contend
In Grid Duel at Eugene
EUGENE (UPI) -Halfback
Mel Renfro is not expected to
play but a quarterback duel be
tween brothers Bob and Ken
Berry could come off in Satur
day's football game between
Oregon and underdog San Jose
State.
Renfro, an all-American for
Oregon as a junior last season,
suffered a cracked rib on a
kickoff return against Washing
ton last week. Coach Len Casa
nova indicated he did not plan
to use him in order to give the
rib more time to heal.
Wants To Play
Bob Berry, Oregon's sharp
junior signal caller, suffered
strained knee ligaments in the
Washington battle. "He wants to
play," Casanova said. "Maybe
he'll be all right. The knee is
sore but not as bad as we had
anticipated."
Ken Berry, Bob's younger
brother, has taken over as the
number one quarterback for San
Jose State. Both played under
their father, Bob Berry Sr., at
Willow Glen High School in San
Jose and papa Berry plans to
attend the game.
But Casanova likely will start
sophomore Jack Soverign at
quarterback, and Dennis Keller,
another soph, will replace Ren
fro. San Jose State has not beaten
Oregon in seven previous tries
and is a three-touchdown under
dog in this game.
PLACED ON WAIVERS
NEW YORK (UPI) - Flanker
back Don Maynard of the New
York Jets was placed on waiv
ers Thursday for the purpose
of putting him on the injured
deferred list.
Maynard, who has a pulled
thigh muscle, will be taken off
the waiver list should any team
claim him (or the $100 waiver
price. The club's second-leading
pass receiver, he is expect
ed to be out for one to two
weeks.
