Feathered Travelers Are
Dispatched By Fall't Arrival
Unnoticed, because the days
are still warm and summer-
like, the fall of the year comes
on arace. Evidence of the
change is visible everywhere if
we care to notice, ine goiaen
rod is in bloom. Across any
vacant lot, or between bushes
and buildings there appear the
silken webs of the late summer
spiders, shimmering in the sun.
Unnoticed by most of us, the
entire world . of insects has
speeded up. These creatures
have just about completed their
life cycles; they are preparing
for the season's end, which also
means the end of their lives.
All the creatures of the wild
cither know it is time for the
change, or at least instinctively
react to it. Their activity has
become almost frantic in the
hurry to readjust themselves.
Many of the shore and wading
birds have migrated south.
Many of them will have traveled
thousands of miles, from north
ern nesting grounds, to warmer
southern shores. By some mys
terious and little understood
method of navigation these
winged tourists have negotiated
great distances without the aid
of a compass,- or a road map.
They have risked a great deal,
faced tremendous hazards,
fought the elements and the
darkness of night; in many in
stances have fought man him
self, to return to the identical
spot their ancestors visited last
year, or a hundred years ago.
First Trip
Many of those birds have
made the trip south for the very
first time. Many were born dur
ing the past summer and are
making the long migration for
the first time. Some of the
younger ones followed their eld
ers who already knew the route.
Others came alone and unaided,
urged on by some inherent pat
tern of behavior established by
their species, many thousands
of generations ago.. How they
know, or how they find their
way over those long, unmarked,
but apparently rccoRnizcd sky
roads is a question the greatest
scientific minds in the world
cannot answer.
The one thing we can be sure
of is they actually do accom
plish the seemingly Impossible,
and arrive and depart accord'
ing to some vague, and pre
arranged plan. - The migrants
are already on the wing, or have
arrived; more will follow as the
fall of the year proceeds, be
cause it's fall, and somehow
they know.
Observant Ones
Although very few mark the
departure or the arrival of the
feathered ones to the southern
shores, those that are the least
observant can also tell the time
of year by looking out across a
body of water, aorose - a field,
or a vacant lot, at a distant
hillside, or for any distance, and
see the peculiar haze Ictwcen
them and the horizon. It is a
flimsy veil of something, thinner
than smoke, more elusive than
fog, that hovers in the cooling
air like a shimmering mist, it
is the brcalh of the drying summer.
Nights will continue 16 grow
cooler. 1 he daytime sun will
lose much of ils.vvaj mth.. Clauds
that have been so constantly
present during the summer, will
grow scarce. As the earth and
the water cools there is less
vapor to feed them; soon the
clouds will die from malnutri'
tion.
By the roadsides,, in. edges of
lakes and ponds, the cattails
turn brown. Leaves withnr- and
fall. The frogs that made the
summer nights vibrant with
their croaking slow to a stop
Turtles too, seek the warmth of
the bottom mud. Somewhere the
sun has already crossed an in
visible line, and suddenly it's
