Citizens Group for Free Cuba Supplies Information
By NEIL A. MARTIN
United Press International
WASHINGTON (UPI) - What
is life really like inside Commu
nist Fidel Castro's Cuba?
For Americans who don't
want to risk loss of their pass
ports or their lives by trying to
Una out in person, there is an
alternative: Ask the Citizens
Committee for a Free Cuba.
Established here last April to
spotlight life in the Caribbean
Communist stronghold, the com
mittee has a ready supply of
what it claims are facts and fig
ures about Cubans, Castro and
communism.
It said its purpose is to bring
such information to the atten
tion of the American public and
Congress.
Publishes Periodical
The committee publishes a
semi-monthly periodical, "Free
Cuba News," with a circulation
of over 6.000. and on request al
so supplies special information.
Secretary Danile James told
UPI that much of the data
which the committee processes
is identical with that compiled
by government agencies. He
said the committee's relation
ship with the agencies is "quite
good."
He insisted the committee op
erates neither in "cooperation
nor competition" with the State
Department and the Central In
telligence Agency in analyzing
the Cuban situation. Rather, he
said, it "tries to- supply the
American public with facts
about Castro's Cuba and. com
munism in this hemisphere
which might otherwise not be
available to them."
"We are by no means com
peting with the government," he
said. "We simply pass on to the
public all the information we re
ceive.
He said the activities of pro
Castro Communists in Central
and South America had forced
the committee to expand its
field.
Drive For Funds
Adm. Arleigh A. Burke, for
mcr chief of naval operations,
is a member of the committee
and is pushing a drive for
money to keep it in business.
He said recently that great
er financial support was ncccs.
sary to help the committee
"mobilize American opinion in
support of measures needed to
defeat communism at our door
steps." Principal information sources
used . by the committee are
monitored Cuban radio broad
casts, Cuban newspapers, inter
views with refugees and reports
from activitist groups inside
and outside Cuba.
A team in Miami, Fla., moni
tors Castro's domestic and
special frequency military
broadcasts and sends trans
cripts to Washington where a
staff translates and evaluates
them.
If an item seems interesting,
James said, the committee will
find and interview a recent re
fugee for confirmation. He said
other information is collected
before a final report is printed
in the news.
Paul Bethel, the committee's
Cuban affairs specialist, said
the methods used had enabled
the committee to accurately
follow developments. He also
said the flow of refugees from
Cuba to Miami had provided a
valuable source of information.

Yugoslavia Said
Getting More Aid
Than Viet Nam
AUSTIN, Tex. (UPI) -r- Mme.
Ngo Dinh Nhu said Thursday
night the United States had ex
tended more aid to Communist
Yugoslavia than had been given
to her Southeast Asia coun
try, which was fighting com
munism. "We have paid back with
14,000 casualties a year. . .with
our blood," she said, while
Yugoslavia "has paid back
nothing."
The First Lady of South Viet
Nam said her country wanted
to become more independent
but did not want to lose all U.
S. aid. Some aid to her coun
try recently was withheld.
"We arc not beggars,'' Mme.
Nhu said, "your gift is not just
a one-way gift. We paid back
with blood."
She said aid to her country
was closely controlled while
Communist Yugoslavia received
help without limitation.
Students Cheer
Mme. Nhu addressed 5.000
University of Texas students
who whooped wildly when she
said "I hear you have the No.
1 football team in the United
States."
The Nhu party was to fly
from Dallas to Phoenix, Ariz.,
at 4 p.m. EDT today, where
she was to continue her revela
tion of the "other side of the
coin" concerning the regime of
Premier Ngo Dinh ' Diem of
South Vict Nam, her brother-in-law.
She referred to criticism
about beatings suffered by
three newsmen who witnessed
a burning suicide in her coun
try by a Buddhist monk. Mme.
Nhu said more about that inci
dent made the news than about
a French reporter who was
shot in the back and killed dur
ing race riots last year in Ox
ford, Miss.

casts," Bethel said, "we are
able to piece together an accu
rate picture of what's going on. '
Bethel said that on Sept. 14
the committee received reports
of a revolt by the second larg
est labor union in Cuba. He said
efforts to find and interview a
fromer union official among the
Miami refugees were successful
and the committee soon will
publish a full report on the in
cident. "The Cuban government is
waging a determined effort to
wipe out the labor unions," he
said.
Internal Developments
Some of the latest internal de
velopments, reported in the
committee's news were:
The off-shore Isle of Pines is
one of 10 areas being trans
formed into a large-scale train
ing camp for Communist revolu
tionaries who are being smug
gled into Central and South
America.
There has been a gradual
departure of Russian person
nel and troops from the island,
but this has been offset by an
increase in Communists from
other Soviet Bloc nations and
Red China.
The resistance of Cuban
teachers to teaching Commu
nist principles resulted in the
tiring of 3,000 in the past three
months. As a result Castro has
made a sixth-grade education
and 12-years of age the mini
mum teaching requirements in
Cuban schools.
