Taiwan Prolessor Visits Forests in Area on Survey
Dr. Tang-Shul Liu, professor
of dendrology and head of the
department of forestry at the
National ' Taiwan ' "University,
China, recently visited the
Rogue Valley.
Dr. Liu is making a survey of
the genus Abies, true fir, which
has about 40 species' throughout
forested regions of North and
Central America, Europe, Asia
and Northern Africa.
While in the United States,
Dr. Liu is a guest of the U.S.
Forest Service. He arrived in I
the Rogue Valley with Dr. I
W. B. Ctilchfield, Placcrville,
Calif., geneticist with the Insti
tute of Forest Genetics.
The two men checked true
firs in the Rustler Peak area
east of Butte Falls. Accompany
'in& the 'pair as guide and cura
tor was Eugene L. Parker, 2.126
Sunnyview Lane, Mcdforri, who
has been Interested in silvicul
ture for a number of years.
Dr. Liu is writing a laxono
mic monograph on the true (ir.
He had expressed particular in
terest in this area since six spe
cies of true firs grow within an
area AO square miles surround
ing Mcdford. II is believed by
some that this is the only place
in the world where this many
true firs join in their natural
ranges.
From here Dr. Liu and Dr.
Crilchfield left for Corvallis
from where Dr. Liu will leave
for Denver, Colo., en route to
Washington, D.C., and Europe.
This Week's Plan for Home Builders
By HIAWATHA ESTES
Farsiehted home builders re
alize the advantage of planning
ample recreation and living
space for all the family from
the very beginning, rather than
attempting to add or convert
rooms later. This home not only
provides a generous living-dining
area but also a large family
room which is partially open
to the kitchen.
A maximum of privacy has
honn nihipviri hv locatine the
informal living area to the rear
of the design. The family room
is completely separated irom
the more formal living room so
the grown-ups and teenagers can
easily entertain at the same
limp without one erouD neces
sarily interfering with the other.
Milling Doors
KliHinp Honrs nnen from the
family room to the huge patio.
A shoulder high winwdow in the
opposite wall allows flexible fur
niture arrangement and cross
ventilation.
The family living center and
the food preparation center, to
gether, otter all tne atmospnere
of the much loved "country"
kitchen. Here, cooking, eating
and family activities are cen
tered. Note the large size eating
nook and wealth of storage
space, including an extremely
wide pantry.
A three-quarter batn is ideally
located off the service area for
mnlti.iKp as it also ooens to
the family room. It features a
pullman lavatory as do the other
two baths.
Reduce Noise
When you separate the sleep
ing and living areas, you not
only reduce noise and traffic
hnt end iin with a verv efficient
operating plan. These areas are
separated nera Dy we. entry ano
hall which opens to the patio.
Both the living and family
rooms have fireplaces which are
located on outside walls so as
not to take up living space in
the home.
The generous amount of stor
age space available should meet
the requirements of any house
wife's dream.
All bedrooms are spacious.
The master bedroom in addition
to having its own bath and dress
ing room has sliding glass doors
opening to the partially roofed
patio.
Clean modern textures of
stone, glass, wood and cedar
shakes have been used in the
design of the street exterior of
this contemporary home.

Hospitals To Ask Payment Change
PORTLAND (UPI) - The
Oregon Association of Hospitals
has voted to ask the State
Welfare Commission to make its
payments on a statewide pro
rata basis.
Hospital officials said in the
last 12 months they have ex
tended services valued at J3.
803.716 to welfare recipients,
and have been paid only $2,
819,824, or 74 per cent, by the
state.
However, they pointed out the
payments have varied from as
much as 85 per cent in o n e
county to 1 per cent in another.
A resolution adopted at the as
sociation's convention Thursday
called this situation "not a c-
ceptable."
A delegation headed by Sa
lem Memorial Hospital adminis
trator Irwin Wedel will make its
request to the welfare commis
sion in Salem Friday.
In other action Wednesday,
the association elevated Sister
Ernestine Marie, administrator
of Providence Hospital in Port
land, as its president. She is
the first nun to hold the position.
