21 Businesses Per
Thousand People
Noted in County
For its size, Jackson County
supports more business enter
prises than do most counties in
the United States.
This fact emerges from a new
Government study, prepared by
the Census Bureau in conjunc
tion with the Department of
Health, Education and Welfare.
Jackson County, it is shown,
has 21 businesses in operation
small, medium and large for
every 1,000 residents.
The ratio is bigger than that
found in most parts of the Unit
ed States, where the average is
17 business establishments per
1,000 people. In the Pacific
States it is 19 per 1,000.
Contained In Report
The findings are contained in
a 15 - volume report, called
"County Business Patterns,
1962." The figures in it were
taken from tax reports submit
ted by employers during t h e
past year. They indicate the
number of business and indus
trial firms in each county, as
, well as taxable payrolls, num
ber of employees and other per
tinent data.
For Jackson County, they
show a total of 1,608 non-farm
businesses, each employing one
or more people, in active opera
tion last year.
Of that number, 957 had up
to three employes, 317 had from
4 to 7 on the payroll and 223
had from 8 to 19.
While small - size establish
ments constitute the bulk of the
local business population, as is
the case generally throughout
the United States, there is no
lack of larger firms.
Approximately 93 per cent of
the total have fewer than 20
employes each.
Proportion Is Greater
The proportion is greater than
in most sections of the United
States, where 90 per cent are
in that category. In the State of
Oregon there are, 91 per cent.
The report shows that Jack
son County's business establish
ments provide jobs for 12,612
people in "covered" employ
ment. This includes every work
er who is covered under social
security.
The facts of life and death
of business firms are to be
seen in the figures. Every day,
enterprises are being discon
tinued and, every day, new ones
spring into being.
About 437,000 businesses are
becun Der year in the United
States, according to the Office
of Business Economics, com
pared to 398,000 that are dis
continued for one reason or an
other.
East Continues
In Drought Grip
By United Press International
An Indian summer drought
burned deeper into the forests
and fields ot tne Kast today.
Water supplies in parts of New
England sank to their lowest
level in nearly 2a years.
Fickle Hurricane Ginny shadow-boxed
with Florida's cast
coast. The storm, packing 75-mile-an-hour
winds at its
center, lumbered slowly toward
the Daytona Beach area early
today.
More than an inch of rain
fell in parts of Texas and Ok
lahoma Wednesday night. Scat
tered showers drifted off the
Pacific across Oregon and
Washington.
Unseasonable heat in the
North shattered several temper
ature records Wednesday. Chi
cago had a high of 85 degrees,
toppling a 62-year mark. Other
records included Cleveland,
Ohio, 80; Moline, 111., 85; and
Buffalo, N.Y., 73.
Cheyenne, Wyo., set an all
time record for late frost.
There has been no frost yet
this fall.
Casper, Lander and Sheridan,
Wyo., all without frost, have set
new records for high tempera
tures so late in the year. Ri
verton, Wyo., which had a frost
Oct. 16, had a record 114-day
. growing season for crops.
Crab Fishermen
To Accept Changes
PORTLAND (UPI) Oregon
crab fishermen indicated
Wednesday they are willing to
' accept changes in fishing laws
to meet Alaskan competition.
Industry spokesman and i n
dividual fishermen told a hear
ing called by the Oregon Fish
Commission here that they
would accept the commission's
recommendation for a uniform
Dec. 1 season opening.
The opening date of the sea
son now ranges from Dec. 1
south of Cascade Head to Jan.
1 in waters north of that point.
The closing date would vary,
but it would never be later than
Aug. 15.
C. Dale Snow, commission
biologist, also recommended a
regulation making it illegal to
remove the backs from crabs
on the boats. "Backing" makes
It impossible for enforcement
officers to determine whether
the crab was of legal size.
