Ben Bella Hopes To Be Undisputed Slider of Socialist North Africa
SUCCESS STORY Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sullivan pose in San
Francisco after his success story came to light. Running a
thriving business empire, Sullivan did not start this way. He
is a former slave and is now one of the richest Negroes on
the West Coast. Sold into servitude at the age of two, Sulli
van went on to be able to support his former master as well
as his master's entire family. The information was revealed
when welfare authorities tried to get Sullivan to take over
welfare payments for his former master whom their records
showed as his adopted father. (UPI)
Senator Promises
Data for Hearing
On Baker Interests
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Sen.
John J. Williams, R-Del., saidj
today he would provide Senate
investigators with "notes and
memoranda" to support infor
mation about business deals of
former Senate Democratic
Secretary Robert G. Baker.
Williams, who triggered the
inquiry into Baker's outside ac
tivities, is scheduled to be the
first witness before the Senate
Rules Committee Tuesday when
closed hearings begin on the
case.
Baker resigned his $19,600-a-year
Senate post on Oct. 7
following reports that he had
an interest in a food vending
firm serving defense plants.
This was followed by other re
volving a $134,500 Washington
residence for his family, a S28,
000 Washington town house
occupied by his secretary, and
motel interests.
Partner With Hodges
The motel interests included
a partnership with Commerce
Secretary Luther H. Hodges in
Charlotte. N.C.
A spokesman said Hodges, a
former North Carolina gover
nor, invested $40,000 in Novem
ber 1960 in the motel and later
purchased the $18,000 interest
of former Senate aide Kidd
Brewer, a North Carolina busi
nessman later convicted for
violating state laws against in
fluence peddling.
Hodges sold his total interest
in the motel for $58,000 to Bak
er in July 1961, the spokesman
said.
Williams said he was satis
fied with the ground rules laid
down for the investigation by
the rules committee, headed
bv Sen. B. Everett Jordan, D-N.C.
Testimony Under Oath
The committtee said all wit
nesses be heard first behind
closed doors and would give
their testimony under oath. The
group also announced it would
ask the FBI for all the infor
activities in a preliminary in
quiry. Williams told a reporter he
had verballv "briefed" Jordan
and Sen. Carl T. Curtis, R
Neb., ranking Republican on
the committee, on what he
learned informally about Bak
er's activities. On Tuesday,
Williams said, he will provide
the nine - member committee
with "notes and memoranda"
supporting that information.
Williams introduced the Sen
ate resolution authorizing the
inquiry. It directed the rules
committee to investigate finan
cial activities of present and
former Senate officials and em
ployes and "conflict of interest"
involved.

PARIS (UPI)-Algeria's left
leaning "strong man" Presi
dent Ahmed Ben Bella is driv
ing all-out to overthrow his
neighbor and fellow Arab ruler,
King Hassan II of Morocco.
He hopes to make himself un
disputed leader of a socialist
North Africa, backed by Soviet
Russia and President' Gamel
Abdel Nasser of the United
Arab Republic.
inose. in tne Deuel ol in-
Ben Bella has launched
offensive against Hassan on
three fronts:
On the Sahara battlefields.
In a violent anti Hassan
campaign by press and radio
aimed at strong opposition forces
in Morocco itself that are a con
stant threat to the 33-year-old
monarch.
In t h e United Nations,
where Ben Bella has sent his
envoy M'hammed Zazid to seek
to drum up support from the
formed French officials, are the Communists, and Afro-Asians
stakes in the "war that is not (a n d other "uncommitted"
yet quite a war" raging on the I nations.
Algerian-Moroccan border in I Big ('aniblr
the Sahara. I On the strictly military side
his Ben Bella has taken a big
on gamble.
The French are convinced
that in a stand-up fight without
foreign intervention the tough,
well trained Moroccan army ,
could smear Ben Bella's raw
troops, who have had little ex
perience of real war aside from
guerrilla fighting in the inde
pendence war against France.
Many of the Moroccans are pro
fessionals who (ought for the
French in World War II and
Indo-China or who served with
U.N. forces in the Congo.
But Ben Bella clearly is bans-
to save him if it should come to
all-out war. Without guarantees
of such support the French arc
convinced Ben Bella would haw
backed down hastily.
At the same time the Al
gerian press and radio, which
are totally controlled by Bon
Bella, launched a violent propa
ganda offensive of personal vi
tuperation against King Hassan.
Said Imperialism Tool
Algerian propaganda has at
tacked the young king as a
"feudalist." a "tool of imperial
ism" and a "pawn of colonial-
ing on arms and other aid from I ism" and has compared him
the Communist bloc and Nasser , w i I h Spanish Generalissimo
Francisco Franco, Portuguese
Premier Antonio Salazar, for
mer Katanga President Moise
Tshombe and various other
stock "enemies" of the Commu
nist bloc.
The aim of this campaign ap
pears to be to encourage the
anti-Hassan groups in Morocco,
including labor unions and oth
er leftist organizations, to
overthrow the king.
So far it apparently has had
little effect. But it could be a
danger to the young ruler.
Yaid's U.N. mission is de
signed to drum up a fierce
anti-Hassan campaign in the in-
, ternational field to supplement
! the propoganda offensive al
ready launched in Algeria itself.
Personal Enemy
It now is clear that King Has
! san is Ben Bella's No. 1 per
sonal enemy.
The 47-year-old former French
, Army sergeant, who has made
himself Algeria's undisputed
one-man boss, sees in Hassan a
permanent threat to his ambi
tions to become leader of Arab
North Africa.
' Ben Bella is fast converting
i Algeria into a near-Communist
j "people's democracy" a North
African Cuba: King Hassan's
! conservative semi-feudal mon
archy is anathema to him.
tne struggle between the two
men has become a life-and-death
showdown for both.
