Three Regional Tree Farms Are Certified
Three new tree (arms were
certified by Industrial Fores
try association at the member
ship meeting of the Southern
Oregon Conservation and Tieo
Farm association meeting re
cently in MedforJ.
Calvin Smith, forester for the
IFA, made the awards to Wes
Pieren of Grants Pass, Alvin L.
Anderson of Grants Pass and
Eugene Moore of V.'imcr.
The awards are made to
acknowledge the efforts made
in providing future timber har
vest material by careful man
agement of forest lands in keep
ing with established and ap
proved methods.
Pieren has fill acres in h:s
"Sunny Valley Tree Farm" lo
cated on Tom East creek in
Josephine county. This is the
location of the historic o I d
Greenback gold minj which
was one of the richest in south
ern Oregon at one lime.
Pieren bought the old growth
timber, which was logged care
fully, leaving a good second
growth of Douglas fir and pine.
The second growth has shown
remarkable gains after the aider
mature timber lias been re
moved, releasing the young
trees.
Anderson worxs at Southern
Oregon Plywood company and
is working 'his Bo-acre tree f irm
by himself. He has .1 good show
of second growth timber which
he is thinning, and weeding out
some hardwoods. Along with
this operation, ne removes all
diseased or insect infected
trees.
Moore gave up dairy ranch
ing about five years ago to turn
to logging and tree farming
His "Evergreen Tree Farm" is
located on property which has
been in his family for 100 years.
His property on Sykes creek
about two miles from Wimer is
being logged by himself with
an assist on the loading by the
neighbor's wife who runs the
tractor for him. His timber is
all virgin growth and is being
logged to leave the healthy
trees for future harvests.

Coast Airlines plane had to
make an emergency hmding
here Monday when one of its
two engines failed.
There were no passengers on
the flight at the time, however,
a West Coast spokesman said
in Iioi.se. The plane was on a
run from Klamath Falls, Ore.,
to Boise at the time.
