"ACKSON County produces about 600 million board
feet of lumber annually. Regeneration and annual
growth may push this figure even higher since
timber is a renewable resource. The lumber industy
generates an estimated $81,000,000.00 annually to the
economy of the area.
There are 19 lumber mills in the immediate Medford area,
12 plywood and veneer plants and 9 wood re-manufacturing
plants. More than $25,000,000.00 is paid out in wages
alone in the forest industry in Jackson County. Approxi
mately 4000 to 4500 find employment in the woods or
mill operations. Hundreds more receive their income in
ditectly from the lumber industry through employment in
lumber-dependent firms.
Lumber is truly the keystone of the Rogue Valley economy.
