Strange As It Seems v elsie hix
Edgar R. He'd stop sucking
his thumb if she'd agree to tie
him up.
Rosalie R. That seems so
cruel. I'm hoping he'll outgrow
it.
j forms us that problems such as
yours are handled in short term
treatment, sometimes only one
interview. Surely you'd want the
thumbsucking to end because its
cause has been removed not be
cause some other nervous habit
has replaced it.
Edgar R. I remember as a
kid that my mother used to put
something that looked like tin
cans on my sister's elbows to
keep her thumbs out of her
mouth. I want Rosalie to use
something like that or any new
invention to end our son's
thumbsucking. He's 7 years old
now and, with his second teeth
in, it's not cute.
Rosalie K. Of course I can
restrain Howie by bandages or
bitter-tasting anliseptic, but that
may make him even more ner
vous than he is. He seemed to
be forgetting about his thumb
last winter, but then I went to
the hospital for an operation
and he's back at it worse than
ever. He'll stop if our life stays
calm.
The Council: That's a big if,
Rosalie. And even if it were pos
sible to control your son's en
vironment, he'll be no more
equipped for the outside world
than is a hothouse flower. No,
you and Edgar need a friend,
someone to delve with you into
the Why ol Howie's infantile carry-over.
At two, thumbsucking is
commonplace, but at 7 it's a
sign of trouble. The strong-arm
counter-attack advised by Edgar
might stop the thumb bit, but
the need behind it will be met
some other way. (Howie may
start to twitch.) He revelled to
his thumb to comfort himself
when you underwent surgery.
Other kids his age might have
turned to an old familiar stuffed
toy, or a faded crib blanket. But
you need counseling to get to the
root of Howie's fears. The Child
Study Association of America in-
