MONTEREY, Calif. (UPI) -Dave
MacDonald of El Monte,
Calif., made it two in a row
Sunday by driving his Cooper
Cobra to victory in the fourth
annual Pacific Grand Prix at
the twisting Laguna Seca
course.
MacDonald, who captured the
Riverside Grand Prix last week,
raced his car around the 100
lap, 1.9 mile course Sunday in
two hours and nine minutes for
an average speed of 83.2 miles
per hour. A crowd estimated at
70,000 watched the performance.
The El Monte driver suffered
severe blisters on his left hand
trying to keep his car from slip
ping out of third gear during a
good part of the race. However,
he hit speeds up to 129.4 mph
after taking the lead at the end
of the 501 li lap and held his ad
vantage the rest of the way.
Former Indianapolis 500
champion A. J. Foyt of Hous
ton, Tex., driving a Scarab
Olds, came in second. Jim Hall
of Midland, Tex., at the wheel
of a rear-e n g i n e Chaparral
which he designed and built
himself, was third. Dave Ride
nour of San Francisco was
fourth in his Genie Buick.

Halas Says
His Team
Not Upset
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)
George Halas refused to con
cede today that his Chicago I
Bears actually were upset
upset bv
the San Francisco Forty Niners
but he settled for the fact that
they lost.
"Upset? There is no such
thing as an upset in this
league," the paternal coach
said in the Bears' locker room
Sunday while helping the equip
ment manager pack up. "Any
team in the National Football
League can win."
And the rag-tag Forty Niners,
led by castoff quarterback La
mar McHan, proved him right
as they stunned Chicago 20-14.
It marked the first setback in
six games this season for the
Western Division pace-setters particularly in picking tne An
while the Forty Niners ended a 1 zona defense apart," Oregon
12 game losing streak that dat- j Coach Lcn Casanova said,
ed back to last season and in- e added "Renfro, of course,
eluded this summer's exhibition
fiasco.
Bears Were Flat
"We'll just try to play better
next Sunday against the Phila
delphia Eagles and I'm sure we
will," Halas continued in his un
ruffled manner. "The Forty
Niners were an aroused team
that was hitting. We were flat."
The shocker was a sweet one
for Jack Christiansen, the for
mer Detroit Lions' defensive
ace, who took over for coach
Red Hickey three weeks ago.
After trying to find the combi
nation with a club that had lost
twice more under his direction,
Christiansen found a winner
when he kept McHan in the
lineup and left Bobby Waters on
the bench.
Now 30 years old and recent
ly cut loose by the Baltimore
Colts, McHan went the distance
while managing an offense that j
knocked the props from under
the toughest defensive club in (
the league.
During the first half. McHan ,
either hit on key passes or
handed off to the revitalized ;
J. D. Smith for terrific shots up ;
the middle as the Forty Niners j
scored tnree times on arivcs 01
59, 78 and 84 yards.
Bears Favored By 17
With only a minute and one
half to play in the second quar
ter the league's weakest offen
sive club was riding a 17-0 lead
against the Bears who entered
the game 17 point favorites.
The holes were there; that's
all I know," Christiansen said.
"Football is 75 per cent desire,
20 per cent plays and five per
cent coaching."
His crew outrushed the Bears
192 to 71 yards as Smith, break
ing out of a prolonged slump,
netted 93 yards in 17 carries.
Tommy Davis booted two
field goals from 25 and 4fi yards
out to back up touchdowns by
Jim Vollenweidcr and Gary
Knafelc.

Forty Niners Stun
20-14 in Pro Grid
By NORMAN MI1.1.ICK
I'I'I Sports Writer
Success came simultaneously
Sunday to Lamar McHan, who
was on the scrap-heap of pro
football only three weeks ago,
and to the San Francisco Forty
Niners, the team that ransomed
him for $100.

u v V'-"",!'" -prions direction before Tittle put
of the National Football League
season in directing the Forty
Niners to a stunning 20-14 vic
tory that knocked the Chicago
Western Division race into a
tie.
This was the Forty Niners'
first triumph of the season and
no team in the league cheered
it more enthusiastically than
Mcllan's old team mates, the
Green ay Packers. By drub
bing the St. Louis Cardinals,
;)0-7, the Packers moved into a
first-place tie with the Bears.
Green Bay and Chicago both
have 5-1 records.
In the Eastern Division, there
was no stopping the Cleveland
Browns as they defeated the
Philadelphia Eagles, 31-7, for a
spotless 6-0 record. The New
York Giants remained two
games behind the lead by beat
ing the Dallas Cowboys, 37-21. ;

The Los Angeles Rams, like
the Forty Niners, won their 1
first game of the year, edging
the Minnesota Vikings, 27-24;
the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied
to beat the Washington Red
skins, 38-27, and the Baltimore j
Colts came from behind to de-1

leacue ike the victory by the
down-at-the-heels Forty Niners
over the rough-tough Bears.
McHan, a failure with three
NFL clubs (Cardinals, Packers
and Colts) during his 10 pro
campaigns, won the quarter
back assignment because Jonn
Brodie was injured and Bob
Waters was found wanting. ;
McHan had been claimed for
the $100 waiver price when let
go by the Colts three weeks ago
and hardly had time to become
fully accustomed to the forty i
Niners' offense such as it was.
Yet the 30-year-old Arkansas
Traveler called a masterful
game, handing off to San Fran
cisco backs for a total of 192
yards to riddle a Chicago de
fense that had yielded a total j
of 3110 to five stronger oppo
nents. Threw One TD Pass
McHan completed 10 of 20
passes for 141 yards and one
touchdown. The Forty Niners
jumped off to a 17-0 lead, sur
rendered a Chicago touchdown !
just before halftimc, and the
defense took over during the fi
nal half. I
At St. Louis, the methodical
Packers scored on each of their (
first five series of downs to
make their "game-of-thc-week"
strictly no-contest. Green Bay
controlled the ball for 48 plays
during the first half, compared
to 19 for the Cardinals, and out-1
gained the Cards, 238 yards'
to 58. . '
