the Creoles residing in the country between Memphis and Hous

character was always named "Mr. Jasbo." This was a corruption
of the French "Chasse-beau," which meant a beau, or dandy, who
took the wind out of the sails of other beaux. "Jasbo" in tima
was shortened further, to the word Jazz, and thus the era of
Jazz was ushered in.
The famous old comedian, David Warfield, used to tell how
his Immigrant father made three important discoveries when he
arrived in America: one: The streets were not paved with gold;
two: The streets weren't even paved at all; three: He was ex
pected to pave them!

Freight Rates

commiltee will be named next
week to select a consultant who
will make a study of freight
rates affecting shippers in Se
attle, Portland and Eastern
Washington.
Francis Pearson, chairman of
the State Utilities and Transpor
tation Commission, said the se
lection committee would repre
sent the commission, the De
partment of Commerce and Eco
nomic Development, and the
transportation industry.
In soma cases, Pearson said,
it is cheaper to ship goods to
Eastern Washington or Puget
Sound areas from Portland
than from Seattle.
"It is a complicated and com
plex situation," he said, "but
apparently the lower rate is in
rail tariffs for some goods. If
it had been used much we
would have known about it be
fore." Consultant Necessary
Pearson said a special con
sultant was necessary because
commission officials "just don't
have the time to make a study
of the magnitude that this one
will have to take."
Pearson said the decision ;
make the study was made at
a commission meeting several
weeks ago. He announced it
Thursday.
The study was prompted by
a series of mergers between
out of state companies and
firms in the "short line" busi
ness as well as the growth of
industrial parks outside of met
ropolitan areas.
"They have made a complete
ly new transportation picture,"
he said, "there are certain
rates in Eastern Washington we
have to look at too, but the Pu
get Sound area is more import
ant at the moment."

Plan Conference
Credit managers and business
operators from Oregon and the
Columbia river region of Wash
ington will join credit bureau
managers and operators for
their annual conference in Eu
gene Oct. 26 and 27, Hugh
Rogers, manager of the Credit
Bureau of Medford has announ
ced. "Changing Times" is the
theme announced for the confer
ence. Speakers will present in
formation on Oregon's economy,
new commercial laws and Ore
gon's families.
The Credit Women's Break
fast club, an organization of
women who are employed in
the field of credit and who meet
regularly for educational pur
poses, also will meet at the
Eugene conference, which will
be held in the Eugene hotel.
Discussion groups will be con
ducted along business and in
dustry lines.

Plans To Mine Onyx
In Area Announced
Plans to start mining npcra-
! tions northwest of Diamond lake
for, travertine onyx have been
announced by Troy Cardine,
Azalea, Ore.
Cardine, who has claims on
40 acres of the property near
Clearwater camp and Toketee
Falls, said that he plans to start
operations in the spring. Prior
to that time, he said, he hopes
to dispose of some carving qual
ity onyx on the property and
rockhounds are welcome in the
area. He noted that the traver
tine onyx is available on top of
the ground.
The onyx ranges in color from i
white to green and brown. The j
property is south of the Ump- j
qua river and signs will be in
stalled for directions, Cardine
