PORTLAND (UPI) The
United States should shift its
foreign policy from one of nar
row national interests to one of
"humanity first under God,"
former Republican presidential
candidate Harold Stassen said
Thursday night.
Stassen, now president of the
American Baptist Church, spoke
at the opening session of a con
ference on world peace spon
sored by the Greater Portland
Council of Churches.
He said continued efforts to
bring the arms race under con-1
trol and strengthening and re-:
organization of the United Na
tions also would contribute to
the chances for peace.
Stassen warned against a feel
ing of hopelessness in negotiat
ing for peace. He noted t h e
Russians did not agree to a plan
that made Austria an independ
ent nation after World ar II
until the 367lh meeting, and the
United Nations charter was ap- j
proved only after long nego-1
tiations in San Francisco I n
