Medford at Klamath Tonight
For Conference Grid Scrap
Medford and Klamath Union
High jayvee football learns will
vie at 11 a.m. Saturday at the
Medford High Stadium. The
game has been moved up from
later starting time in order that
fans may see both the jayvee
contest and the Oregon-Arizona
game on television.
Klamath Union High School's
football Pelicans will fight to
make homecoming a happy one
tonight. But, Medford's Black
Tornado, with memories of 1961
will be out to wreck it.
Medford and Klamath are ad
versaries in an 8 p.m. Southern
Oregon Conference game at Mo
doc Field in Klamath Falls.
This will be the 49th gridiron
conflict for the Pelicans and
Black Tornado since rivalry be
gan in 1914. In the previous 32
embroilments Medford has been
32 times the victor. The Pels
have won nine times. Deadlocks
have resulted in the seven other
outings.
The rivalry of so long stand
ing should be suffici ent to incite
these grid combatants. But, at
the core of this struggle is the
fact that the Pelicans are hun
gry birds. And, homecoming
could whet their appetites.
Medford Favored
Medford, No. 2 and 3 rated in
!he state, is the favorite. Against
three schools met by both teams
this fall, Medford has come out
the winner. Klamath has laiien
to all three. The Black Tornado
of Coach Fred Spiegclberg is 4-1
this season but unmarred Dy an

on to the battlefield five times.
They have yet to win a game.
Both clubs have been prepar
ed for this evening's scramble
by competition with strong foes.
While Medford has been the
more successful, there's been
object lessons along the way.
And, the Pelicans have flashed
potential that any time may
jell.
This will be the second scuffle
in the conference for each con
tingent. Medford last week had
its toughest Oregon challenge of
the season and got by Crater
barely 6-0. Klamath bowed to
Grants Pass 19-0.
Precedent
There's precedent for upset
which is only two years old. In
1961, the Pelicans, fired up and
flying high nicked the favored
Tornado 7-6. It was the first
Medford loss in conference foot
ball since 1961. Eventual out
come of the conference race was
a three-way tie. Medford went
on to win from Grants Pass
which beat Klamath and GP
took the role of district repre
sentative in the playoff by a
draw.
Memories of two years ago
bring up the question of whether
the Pels will revive their "go-go-go"
brand of football. One
thing will be missing. It will not
be Friday the 13th.
Split T Offense
Klamath Falls will battle Med
ford with a split T offense with
split ends and flanker backs.
The Whitcbird operate with
John Parisotto at quarterback,
Mike Kitching at left half, Verne
Petrick at right half and Chuck
Mills at fullback. Parisotto,
Kitching and Bob Williams Jr.,
son of the coach are throwers;
Kitching, Bob Moore, Mills and
John Jendrzcjewski are among
receivers.
Terry Eccles and Rick Gustaf-
son are other running backs.
Gustafson may not play because
of leg injury which has kept him
out of several games.
Medford will operate its I and
single wing multiple assault.
Mike Barnes is quarterback and
Rich Knight could see duty at
the post. The Tornado has Tim
Murray and Jim ux at icu
halves; Greg Gandce at right,
with Ron Edmonds and Larry
Vowcll backing him and Bill
Enyart at fullback with support
from Greg Dippel.
Targets for passes by Barnes,
Knight and Vowcll could be Cox,
Gandec, Steve Toews and Wal

Sacred Heart Foe
Of St. Mary's High
There'll be a mass invasion of
Klamath Falls from Medford
this evening on the parochial
school, as well as public school
front.
For the St. Mary's High school
footballers go to the Whitebird
town as well as the Medford
Black Tornado.
St. Mary's will oppose Sacred
Heart of Klamath Falls at
Gem's Stadium. The Rogue
league will be at 8 p.m.
The Crusaders of Medford will
seek to even their record in the
circuit standings. They are 1-2.
Sacred Heart has not won a
game this season, losing three
within the league.
After a rugged battle with
Phoenix last Saturday, this has
been a sort of resting week.
The Crusaders got Monday off
and few were on hand Tuesday
because of a jayvee game.
Trojans Rising
Coach Bill McKibbin reported
that the Crusaders "have not
done an awful lot this week."
He, nevertheless, added, "We
are not taking it (the Sacred
Heart game lightly."
Warning has been issued that
the Trojans, who've been a
doormat in the loop, are coming
along, are tougher than they
might seem. They gave the
Rogue River Chiefs a battle last
week.
Both St. Mary's and Sacred
Heart have encountered Phoe
nix. The Pirates overcame SM
20-0 last week and laced the Tro
jans 60-O in the opener of the
league race. In other Rogue
games I h e Crusaders downed
Lakevicw 14-0 and lost to Illi
nois Valley 25-0. Sacred Heart
fell to Henley 55-0 and to Rogue
River 21-7.
Possible St. Mary's starters
tonight are Dan Kosmatka, cen
ter; Steve Cook and John Lucas,
guards; Randy Corliss and Mike
Hutchinson, tackles: Dennis
Rose and Ray Richter. ends:
John Batzcr, quarterback; Jeff

In Rogue Loop Test
PHOENIX-"No matter what
team has been rated belter in
past seasons, this one has al
ways been a tough one for ei
ther team and we don't think
this one will be any different."
That is the attitude the No. 1
ranked Phoenix High School Pi
rates carry into their Rogue
league football game with Eagle
Point. The game will be at 8
o'clock tonight at Phoenix.
"We think," said Buccaneer
Coach Jack Woodward, "that
Eagle Point is a team that's
been improving every week.
They moved from single wing
to T and it takes time to get
rolling smoothly. Eagle Piont
scored four touchdowns in the
first half against Lakeview and
coasted in ... so we know
we're in for a ball game."
This week, said Woodward,
"we've really gone out there and
knocked heads and had some
good rough work. We think that
is one of the things the team
needed." He stated that coaches
have tried to get the club down
to some real hard work because
it was felt that drills in the past
few weeks have been a little too
easy.
Correct Mistakes
In the last week end's game
against St. Mary's the offense
made about every mistake there
is to make, Woodward com
mented. "We think we've cor
rected some of these," he said.
Some play assignments have
been changed in the effort for
correction. He remarked that
against the Crusaders the Pi
rates were not only making mis
takes in execution but often we
just plain doing the wrong
thing."
Woodward reported that half
back Dennis Grennan has rib
j bruises
but probably will be
ready to go against the Eagles
He said that Bob Fenton has
been showing well in practice
and is slated to start at offen
sive tackle with Gary McGari
ty to assume the defensive tack
le post.
Some of the reserves who
have been doing real well and
are bound to see a lot of action
are Charles Roberts, 210-pound
tackle; Ed Mitchell, guard, and
Ramon Mata and Dick L'nruh,
linebackers.
Probable starters tonight for
Phoenix are Greg Esp and Gary
Smith, ends; Fenton and Ron
Patterson, tackles; Dave West
fall and Ken Tycksen, guards;
Paul Diederich, center; Ron Wil
