I Quits Air Force
For Civilian Job
HOUSTON (UPI) - Jfal.
Donald K. (Deke) Slayton, 39,
whose "grossly irregular"
heartbeat made him the only
original U.S. Mercury astro
naut never to make a sDaca
flight, has given ud his Air
Force career.
He will continue with the na
tional space agency as a civili
an.
"Mai. Slayton feels that in a
civilian capacity, he can better
carry out his supervisory ac
uviues, a spouesman for the
National Aeronautics and Spaca
Administration (NASA) said.
To Avoid Partiality
Slayton said in his letter of
resignation from the Air Force
Mat he felt that as a civilian.
he can participate in selection
of flight crews without the pos
sibility of appearance of par
tiality towards any one branch
of the service.
He asked that the resienation
be made effective Nov. 20, giv
ing proper time for orocessintf
of his records. Slayton will then
be appointed a civilian astro
naut and coordinator of astro
naut affairs through civil serv
ice. .
He will be the third civilian
astronaut among America's
first 16 chosen for space. The
others are former civilian test
pilots Neil Armstrong Jr. and
Elliot See.
Sense of Permanency
"Being a civilian gives Slay
ton a sense of permanen
cy," the NASA spokesman said,
"It means that he will not just
be assigned here as an Aif
Force officer, but will be here
with us permanently."
All military astronauts are
on loan to NASA from the vari
ous branches of the service.
Slayton still hopes to partici
pate in a manned spaceflight.
His civilian status will neither
hamper nor help him accom
plish this, the NASA spokesman
said.
Ironically, It was the Air
Force medical board which
passed Slayton for his original
space flight. It was the civilian
cardiologists who countermand
ed the Air Force decision.
In Slayton's opinion, his
grossly irregular" heart beat
isn't anything unhealthy. It's
just like having one blue and
one brown eye."

'Unloaded' Rifle
Shot Kills Man
AL TAHOE, Calif (UPf)
A cook at a gambling casino
was killed Tuesday by a rifle

bedroom window.
John E. Robinson, 38, w a s
killed instantly when a .30-.30

he stood on the front porch of
a home next door to the home
of one of the boys.
Deputies said the rifle was
fired by Carl Harris, 18, State
line, who was visiting Larry
Henderson, 17, Al Tahoe, at his
home.
Harris said he was operating
the mechanism of the rifle in
Henderson's bedroom when 1 1

Christmas Project
Appeal Is Made
An appeal to local service
clubs interested in a Christmas
project has been issued by Mrs.
Harry Daudt urging them to
consider collecting gifts for dis
tribution to the more than 2.500
residents at Fairview Home in
Salem.
The gifts, which would be for
the mentally retarded persons
of all ages, will be gathered by
a special committee for wrap
ping and distribution, Mrs.
Daudt said. Participation in this
project, she pointed out, gives
organizations an opportunity to
help many individuals who may
otherwise be forgotten.
Organizations and individuals
interested in the project, and
wishing more information are
asked to contact Mrs. Daudt by
telephoning 482-0853.
