Jackie Kennedy's
Trip on Onassis
Yacht Questioned
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
propriety of Mrs. Jacqueline
Kennedy's trip aboard the lux
ury yacht of Greek shipping
magnate Aristotle Onassis has
been called into question Mon
day by a Republican congress
man. Rep. Oliver P. Bolton of Ohio
also asked if it were not "ex
tremely poor judgment" for
Undersecretary of Commerce
Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. and
his wife to join Mrs. Kennedy's
party aboard Onassis' yacht,
Christina, and accept his "lav
ish hospitality."
The White House had no com
ment on Bolton's statement.
When Mrs. Kennedy's Greek
tour was announced, the White
House said the Onassis yacht
was to be obtained by her sis
ter, Princess Lee Radziwill,
with the First Lady being a
guest of her sister.
'Favored Treatment'
Bolton charges that Onassis'
shipping interests have received
"favored treatment" from the
U.S. government dating back to
1957. He said a corporation in
directly controlled by the
wealthy shipowner was receiv
ing federal mortgage guaran
tees for the construction of four
ships.
Bolton said a SI. 4 million
mortgage payment, guaranteed
by the U.S. government, was
due for one ship on Oct. 10.
According to the Commerce
iJcpartmcnt, there has been no
word from the controlling inter
est that this payment will be
made," Bolton said.
Bolton also asserted that
Onassis had made a $20 million
"windfall" in 1357 when the
Maritime Administration per
mitted him and his companies
to transfer 14 ships from Amer
ican registry to foreign registry.

In another significant action,

At one of the busiest sessions

just a smooth politician. He's
always the good guy, the mar
tyr, to keep in right with every
body. When we were kids he'd
join me in fun and mischief, all
right, but somehow he could al
ways make himself look inno
cent and I'd get the blame and
punishment. I'm not a faker
like him I come right out
with my honest feelings. If they
bother Chet, that's his worry.
He's afraid of truth.
The Council: It's a common
family pattern, this two-brother
setup where whatever one is the
other isn't. Psychologists inter
pret such extreme divergence
as a sibling's way of saying,
"I'm me, not him, and don't
ever mix us up." It's a subcon
scious ploy for recognition as an
individual. Here we have Chet
keeping most of his emotion
locked neatly in a box, in con
trast to Gordon who explodes
at will, victimizing all who come
in range of the buckshot. It may
shock Mrs. L. to learn that
Gordon is the healthier of the
two, although he needs some
taming and toning down. An in
teresting study of identical twins
by two doctors at the Univer
sity of Rochester revealed that
the one who "fusses and fights"
emerges from stressful situa
tions in better shape than the
one who keeps troubles inside.
This jives with the observation
that some types get ulcers, oth
ers give them. Mrs. L. should
encourage Chet to express his
real feelings, be less of a stuffed
shirt. This should bring him
more in Gordon's orbit. But Gor
don must distinguish "honesty"
irom Deiiigercnce.

Feminine Candidate Go
Ahead in Arkansas Fight
SULPHURROCK, Ark. (UPI)
The battle of the sexes is in
full swing in this north-central
Arkansas community of 225.
The ladies are far out in front.
The women put up an all
female slate to oppose the gen
tlemen in the city's Nov. 5 elec
tion and then the men put to
gether a hurried-up slate to run
against them.
But Mrs. Varna Travis, can
diate for mayor, kept the wom
en one jump ahead. She waited
until after the deadline for fil
ing, and then announced two of
the men candidates had not
paid their poll taxes and there
fore weren't eligible.
Mrs. Travis has a state at
torney general's opinion to
back her up. Monday night she
said, "The boys are still speak
ing to me though."
"This ought to prove a wom
an can keep a secret," she
said. "I didn't tell a soul about
the poll taxes not being paid
until after it was too late to
refile."
Mrs. Travis admitted that

she had not seen the two would-
be candidates. She said it still
is up to the county election
board to rule on whether the
two can run, but she is confi
dent the board will see it her
way.
Mrs. Travis said it was a
mark of carelessness on the
part of the men that they had
neglected to pay their poll
taxes.
"I think if they're so care
less, so unfamiliar with the
law, it shows we women could
do a better job," Mrs. Travis
said.
It was fairly easy for Mrs.
Travis to get access to the poll
tax records. She is the city's
recorder and knows for certain
who docs and who doesn't pay
their taxes.
