Black Tornado Scare
2nd Succesive Year
If fhe Medford Black Tornado
is No. 1 among the Class A-ls
in Oregon, where docs that rank
the stubborn, stalwart and re
solved Crater High school Com
ets? That was a big question Fri
day night after the unshrinking
Fireballs, unawed by Ihe state's
prep rating polls and steadfast
in purpose, threw a tremendous
scare into the Whirlwind for
the second successive season.
Medford, taking advantage of
a short, deflected punt and ap
plying brute power, battered 27
yards in the third quarter for
the evening's only touchdown to
squeak by the Central Pointers
6-0 in Southern Oregon confer
ence football at the Medford
stadium.
Tht Tornadoes escaped again
but not before Crater followers,
who had said, "We just hope
the boys give Medford a good
game," got their money's worth
plus a substantial bonus.
No Fluke
"It proves last year's game was
no fluke," declared Comet Coach
Keilh Johnson of the banging,
bruising battle.
The "lucky" Hurricane tabu
lated off its only real opportu
nity of the night. Otherwise, it
got no closer to Ihe touchdown
zone than Crater's 29-yard line.
Meanwhile, the blazing Fire
balls, who commanded the first
half, reacheti the Medford 11
and 29 in the second quarter.
A schiicI to the Mcilford-Cra-ter
high varsity football game
this week end is slated on Mon
day. Junior varsities of Ihe two
schools will contend. The game

field in Central Point.
Medford took over the ball on
Ihe Comet 27 after a Roger
Ncufeld punt was tipped by Tor

and traveled only 20 yards. Bill
Enyart gainetl two yards for
the Tornado. Mike Barnes, run
ning from left half instead of
quarter, made one yard then
lipped off eight for first down
on Ihe lfi. Enyart went for 12
and first down and goal on the
four.
Enyarl made one more, Tim
Murray cracked for two and
Enyart poked the final yard lo
Ihe goal. George Dames' conver

Didn't Quit
"Our kids hit hard and didn't
quit," said Johnson of his Com

football. They have nothing to
be ashamed of . . . They all
were tremendous ... It was a
tremendous team effort . . .
Maybe, some day we'll win."
Said Fred Spiegelberg, coach
of Ihe Black Tornado:
"We were lucky. Every year
il's the same slory."
The Cornels were "like Chi
nese bandits," the Tornado men
lor staled. He expressed Ihe
feeling that Ihe Central Point
club played "over their heads."
Hut, he was quick to add, "They
are a good football learn. I hope
Ihey keep on going."
It was the Kllh straight win
for Medford since Crater look
the first game between t h e
schools back in 1953. Medford
survived last year by a scant
7-0. There was contention that
a soggy field helped the Corn
els. This time the turf was dry.
White Stands Out
Rav White was an "all over
the field" defensive standout
for Ihe Fireballs. White calls
the defensive signals for the
Crater club and Johnson said
that against Medford Friday "It
was the best joh he's ever
done." Comet Frank Armstrong
