Medford High school's Black I
Tornado and the Crater Lomets
are the adversaries. They come
together at the Medford stadi
um. Kickoff will be at 8 p.m.
It will be the league inaugural
of 1963 for both schools, follow
ing a slate of non-loop games.
The aggregations get down to
official business with champion
ship in mind. Medford carries
the standard of defending
champ both in conference and

prep polls while Crater is un

And, there's expectation of a
fiery battle. For, there's some
thing about playing Medford
that generally brings out best
effort by the Comets. Coach
Keith Johnson's cohort of grid
ders is likely to pull out all
stops and try to spring a few
surprises against Coach Fred
Spicgelberg's agg r e g a t i o n,
which is favored, has more
depth in personnel and may
come up with a few machina
tions of its own.
There's an inclination to re
gard Crater as a sleeper in the
circuit.
The T formation Comets will
throw backs Roger Neufeld,
Darryl Summerfield, Sherm Ki-
ger, John Hall, Vern Swanson
and Chuck Taylor against Med
fords. And Medford with its
multiple attack will have Mike
Barnes, Greg Gandee, Bill En
yart, Tim Murray and Greg
Dippel among its threats.
Memory of the 1962 game at
Central Point could fire both
contingents. The Comets came
close to ending nine-year Med
ford domination, holding the
Tornado to a 7-0 nod. No other
team held Medford to just a
single touchdown last fall. And,
its performance ranked t h e
Fireballs among the toughest
challengers Medford faced along
its stormy path to the state
crown.
Rain May Dampen
While the storm upon the
field is expected to be a foot
ball one, nature may have some
influence on the game. The
field could be wet. The weather
bureau reported .16 of an inch
of rain early today and forecast
widely scattered showes.

Ducks Entertain Idaho
PORTLAND (UPI) - Oregon
and Oregon State confine their
football activities to the Pacific
Northwest Saturday, with the
Beavers meeting Washington in
Seattle while the Ducks enter-
lain Idaho in Eugene.
Although the Beavers are un
defeated this season while
Washington has lost three in a
row, oddsmakers still rate that
game a toss-up.
The Beavers have a potent
i passing combination in quarter
i back Gordon Queen to end Vern
Burke. And, after last Satur-
day's 22-15 victory over Bay
lor, Coach Tommy Prothro can
count on the proven talents of
fullback Charlie Shaw, and half
backs Danny Espalin and Leroy
Whittle.

! boast a rugged ground defense.

The overall competition Med
ford has faced is considered
tougher. But, Crater in beating
Lebanon turned back a club
which looms a challenger in the
Valley league to three of the
Tornados non-league foes this
fall.

Battle Royal, Gets
Match With Borne
Nick Bockwinkle, a newcomer
who wowed the fans with his
clever style of wrestling, won
all the marbles at the Medford
armory last night. He whipped
nasty Don Duffy after a gruel
ling match and then won the
battle royal, with its side purse
of $200.
Bockwinkle had to defeat
Tough Tony Borne to win the
battle royal. Borne wasn't satis
fied with the outcome and chal
lenged Bockwinkle to a regular
match. The good-looking Minne
apolis youngster was more than
willing and matchmaker Elton
Owen promptly signed them for
the main event at the armory
next Thursday night, Oct. 17.
It was a hectic evening, dur
ing which first the ring broke
down and then the big overhead
light went out.
A large support cracked when
Gil Ane threw Art (Boom Boom)
Mahalik across the ring during
the curtain-raising match. They
went to a no-fall draw.
As Mahalik was leaving the
ring when he was eliminated in
the battle royal, he tripped over
an extension cord, extinguishing
tne tug ring light. The battle
royal continued in darkness un
til armory personnel could find
the trouble.
In the feature preliminary
match Borne whipped Dick
Dunn.
The order of elimination in
the free-for-all was Dunn, Ma
halik, Ane, Duffy and finally
Borne.

club said that scouting reports
show the Mountainers to be a
big team although young.
The big EOC forward wall
could play havoc with both the
rushing and passing game of the
Raiders but Akins still is count
ing on the air-ground balanced
offense which has made the
Ashlanders tops within their
league.
SOC's attack combine includes
Bill Bailey who leads the loop
in passing, Denny Ellis top OCC
man in receiving, Doug Olsen
who heads the loop in scoring
and Dave Nord who is the lead
ing Raider rusher.
Eastern Oregon was loser last
week in its first league outing,
38 to 0, to Portland State.
SOC looms the favorite at La
Grande but often has encoun
tered trouble on the northeast
Oregon field.

The Denver Invaders made an
aggressive debut in the West
ern Hockey League Thursday
night, but they couldn't get past
goalie Don Head of the Portland
Buckaroos.
The Oregon club posted a 4-1
victory in the opening game of
the 1963 WHL season before a
disappointing 'crowd of 1,756.
The Invaders fired 27 shots to
Portland's 19 in the first period,
but they were blocked by Head
who was credited with 39 saves.
