Killer of Roseburg Man Ruled Insane
LOS ANGELES (UPI)-A for
mer mental patient charged
with running down a delegate to
the Jehovah s Witnesses assem
bly last month and fatally injur
ing him with his car, Tuesday
was adjudged insane.
George Rivera, 28, was held
on charges of murder and as
sault with a deadly weapon and
accused of deliberately crash
ing his car into Harold Mather,
38, Roseburg, Ore., the night of
Sept. 3.
Mather was riding on the bus
with members of the assembly
as they returned to their hotel
following an evening session.
Rivera forced the bus to stop
by pulling in front of it, then
witnesses said he aimed his car
at the bus as Mather stepped
down, and crashed into him.
Dr. Karl 0. Von Hagen, a
court-appointed psych iatrist,
recommended that Rivera, of
Los Angeles, be committed to a
mental inst:tr.ion. Superior
Judge Donald R. Wright ordered
Rivera, who claimed he "had
orders from above" to stop the
bus, remanded to the psychia
tric court.

Navajos Appeal
Drug Conviction
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.
(UPI) Three Navajo Indians
found guilty of using the cactus
derived narcotic peyote in reli
gious ceremonies appealed their
conviction Tuesday in U.S. Dis
trict Court.
Judges Gerald Brown and
Lloyd E. Griffin have 90 days
in which to decide on the appeal
motion.
In arguing for reversal of the
conviction in Superior Court last
Nov. 29, American Civil Liber
ties Union lawver A. L. Wiron
contended the defendants' con
stitutional rights of religion
were violated when they were
lounci guilty.
The defendants Jack Woody,
29, Dinnevito Trading Post,
Ariz.; Dan Dee Nez, 52, Lud
low, Calif.; and Leon Anderson,
Parker Dam, Calif. had been
placed on two year's probation
and each agreed to refrain from
further use of the drug. They
were arrested in April 1962 in
an Indian hogan.
