There are approximately 2,019

this year. The figure is an all
time record high for the school.
The approximate enrollment last
year was 1,860.

Because of the increase In
students at Medford High, there
are also several new teachers.
The following people have been
added to the faculty this year:
- Mary Christensen, Sandra Ga
' ble, Alyda Gilkey, Robert Gross,
and Jerry Sanders, English;
Beverly Butts, Sandra Chamber
: lain, and Joan Kirk, homemak-
- ing; Linda Evans, John Fink-
- beiner, and Mary Gayle Walter,
business education.
Also new this year are Helen
Roper and Robert Werner, math
ematics; Robert Bork, Gary
Lovre, and Virginia Westerfield,
music; Judy Benson, girls' P.
E.; Milford Biddington, social
studies; Dorothy Corbit, French;
and Frank Williams, librarian.
Alice Smock and Robert Myrick
are counselors.
In addition to the new teach
ers, there are seven associate
teachers and four teachers aides
receiving experience in teaching
at Medford High.
The homeroom, a 25-minute
period required of all students
is in use at MHS for the first
time this year. This time is set
aside for explanation of school
rules, movies dealing with teen
age problems, and guidance and
counseling.
Sophomore class elections
were held recently. Those elect
ed are Barbara Halby, presi
dent; Sal Esquivel, vice presi
dent; Diane Shinn, secretary;
and Linda Dorr ell, class representative.
Individual pictures for "Cra
ter," the yearbook, were taken
two weeks ago. Riley Winchell,
Crater adviser, reported that
about 630 sophomores and 640
juniors were photographed.
Coupons are now on sale for the
senior pictures. Large group pic
tures will be taken later in the
year because all the students of
MHS are available during third
and sixth period only and each
picture takes about 20 minutes
to take.
"Inherit the Wind," a Thespi
an production is to be presented
Nov. 21, 22, and 23, in the Med
ford High school auditorium at
3 p. m. by Thespian Troupe 358.
The cast includes: Melinda,
Linda Keplinger; Howard, Tom
McGraw; Rachell Brown, Donna
Budge; Bertram Cates, Mike
McDonald; the Rev. Brown,
Mike DeSalvio; E. K. Hornbeck,
Dave Smith; Matthew Harrison
Brady, Bruce Guenther; and
Henry Drummond, John Eads.
The tickets are $1.50 for re
served seats; $1 general admis
sion for adults; and 50 cents for
students.
Saturday, Sept. 21, five mem
bers of the Crater staff attended
a Crater workshop in Eugene.
Those attending were Sharon
Baize, Marty Merriman, Anna
Richardson, Roseann Hagerman
and Mike Vaughn. They were
accompanied by Riley Winchell.
Medford High school was no
ticeably affected two weeks ago
by the hot weather that sizzled
Medford. Classes became so hot
everywhere that both students
and faculty had a hard time
keeping their minds on school
work.
One math teacher, Robert
Werner, whose afternoon geom
etry class became so oppressive
ly hot, solved the problem. He
and his students filed from the
room to finish a geometry test
that proved to be more con
veniently done by students while
' scattered in the shade of the oak
trees on the school lawn.
This year, the clubs at MHS
have been set on a split sched
ule. Group I and Group II meet
on an alternate two-week basis.
Group I meets third period and
Group II meets sixth period.
This relieves the amount of stu
dents leaving third period as
happened last year.
There are about 27 clubs this
year. They include clubs con
cerned with teaching, medicine,
science, drama, art, sports, and
many others.
The first publication of Med
ford Hi-Times, the school news
paper, was Sept. 20. Important
staff members of the paper in
clude Elain Davenport, editor,

Wakefield, and Craig Savage on
the editorial board. Dale Hock
ersmith and Danae Patella are
the feature editors. Nick and
Chris Rassmussen head the
crvirtc ctaff
Because of the large turnout
for Hi-Times, the paper will be
double-staffed this year. Begin
ning with the second issue, each
staff will publish every other
issue.
