about 160 statute miles south
east of Port au Prince. Haiti,
moving at about 0 mph.
Hurricane warnings were is
sued for the Haitian peninsula
eastward to Caho Beata, Do
minican Republic, and north
ward through the northwest
province of Haiti. Whole Rale
warnings were in ctfect on a
line west of Bahia do Neiba,
Dominican Republic, to Cape
Haitien on the north coast of
Haiti. Gale warnings were or
dered for the remainder of His-
paniola west of a line from
Santo Domingo city to Puerto
Plata.
Torrential rains were forecast
for Haiti and Western Domini
can Republic and the advisory
warned of "a definite threat of
destructive floods on all major
rivers and streams."
Hurricane winds extended SO
miles to the north and cast of
Flora's center and 25 miles to
the south and west, dale winds
reached 175 miles to the north
and 100 miles to the soulh and
west.
Peaks May Sap Fury
The mountain range on the
Haitian Peninsula has peaks
5,000 to 7,000 feet high, and
weathermen said this could sap
some of the fury out of Mora
Hurricane Edith, the 100-milc-an-hour
storm which preceded
Flora, diffused and subsided into
a tropical storm shortly after
crossing the mountainous east
ern lip of the Dominican Re
public last Friday.
But forecasters said Flora was
larger and much more intense
than Edith and would be less
likely to break up in the Haitian
mountains.
Pilot Art Program
Planned at College
ASHLAND - A pilot art pro
gram for children of Southern
Oregon college faculty members
will he initialed Oct. H. under
Ihe instruction of Dr James
Docrter, head of the SO Cart de
partment. The art classes will he held
every Tuesday from .1 to 5 p.m.
for children from 5 to 7 years
of age.
According to Dr. Dnerler, i(
the program proves a sucrss,
art classes may be expanded
to include local children.
The art course is aimed at
providing various creative ac
tivities for children under pro
fesional supervision and is di
rected more toward an empha
sis on expressive, creative ex
periences rather than toward
sophisticated end products.
Dr. Doerter has had public
school experience and has work
ed with the children's art classes
at Pennsylvania State univ ersity
and in connection with the Sa
lem Art association. Parents
wishing additional information
