(the Po3t Office Department)
and tlicy claim they are getting
more public cooperation than
they had expected when they
aligned everyone in the coun
try a five - digit postal zone
number back in July.
As a matter of fact, they
feel the response has been so
favorable they are trying to
speed up development of a ma
chine which would sort ZIP
coded mail without mortal aid.
As tliey expected when they
announced the ZIP code pro
gram, most of the early en
thusiasm for it is coming from
the large - volume mailers such
as insurance companies, maga
zine publishers, mail order
houses and big companies that
do regular bluing.
Firms Cooperate
At the outset the department
announced that It expected co
operation from about 79 per
cent of the 25,000" laiRT firms
that account for about half of
the nation's mail volume.
More than 80 per cent of these
firms that have been surveyed
since the program started have
reported Hint (hey are already
using ZIP code or are convert
ing their mailing lists so they
can.
As for letters to "Aunt Min
nie" there is no official sur
vey to indicate how many per
sonal letters contain the ZIP
code, either in the return ad
dress or in (he mailing adress.
One official at 202W) mnde a
"guesstimate" of around 20 per
ctnt for llib mailing addresses
and a little higher than that on
the return address.
The department expects those
percentages to climb after the
Christmas mailings because
most people update their cor
respondence lists alter the an-
mini influx of Christmas cards.
And anyway it is the large
mailers that the department is
immediately concerned with. If
the larger mailer has your num
ber he can use his automatic
equipment to pie-sort his mail
ings and save the department
a lot of work.
Using your ZIP code num
ber is essentially something the
department wants you to do now
so you will be in the habit of
doing it when they complete
development of a machine that
will read these numbers and
automatically sort the mail.
Originally, development of
this machine wis expected to
take about five years. Now i

The real area where the de
partment feels it is making
progress beyond expectation is
in public awareness of the ZIP
code.
The director of a new slage
play recently agreed to slip a
line about ZIP code into the di
alogue and the line received
one of the biggest laughs in the
show. Mention of ZIP code in
advertisements, cartoons, com
ic strips and Jokes also indi
cate to the department that
the idea of ZIP code is catch
ing on throughout the country,
even among those who do not
like it.

ming al Jackson pool, the super
vised activities of the summer
recreation program of the Mcd-
ford recreation department were
brought to a close during Au
gust, according to Park and
Recreation Director Robert L.
Haworth.
In his monthly report released
recently, llnworth pointed out '
that attendance al the summer
playground activities this year
was high, notably in baseball,
tennis and track.
Two baseball leagues held
competition this summer, a
class in baton twirling was held,
golf instruction was offered, two
softhall leagues were main
tained, various swimming pro
grams aod meets were held, and
instruction was given in tennis,
trampoline and tumbling.
A total of 774 youngsters al
lended four teen-age dances held
during August at the Medlord
High school tennis courts under
the sponsorship of the Medford
Junior Chamber of Commerce
and the park and recreation de
partment. More than 250 children be
tween 6 and 12 years old partici
pated in the department's an
nual "Play Day," an event held
in Hawthorne park Aug. 8.
