Operator of Doll
Museum Talks at
Chamber Lunch
The proprietor of the Doll Mu
seum, located in the old McCully
house in Jacksonville, displayed
some of her dolls and gave the
background of each at the Mon
day noon luncheon of the Med
ford Chamber of Commerce
Boundtable.
Mrs. Leona Stone Sawyer ex
plained that she and her hus
band moved to Jacksonville
about two years ago, fulfilling a
long-time desire to locate in this
area after retirment.
She said their decision to pur
chase the McCully house for
their residence has proved a
happy one since the historic,
two-story dwelling at Fifth and
California sts. is an ideal show
case for the collection of about
350 rare old dolls.
The bulk of the doll collection
came, Mrs. Sawyer said, from
the estate of her mother, Lila
Stone, who was an antique deal
er in Santa Cruz for a number
of years. Mrs. Stone had gath
ered about 500 rare dolls during
her lifetime, several of which
were lost to the collection after
her death in 1049.
The speaker said the oldest
doll ir: her collection a creche
figure from Italy made of terra
cotta dates back to about 1790.
The total collection is insured
for $10,000. and Mrs. Sawyer
said she has been offered $1,000
for one doll alone.
There have been about 3.000
visitors to the Doll Museum so
far this year, Mrs. Sawyer said,
compared to about 2,000 during
1962.

A "background paper" disput
ing arguments advanced by the
U. S. lumber industry was dis
tributed to news media and in
terested parties, including con
gressmen. Decision Reviewed
The four-page statement re
viewed the February, de
cision of the I'. S. Tariff Com
mission rejecting a U. S. indus
try application for tariff and
quota relief. It argued that
U. S. imports of Canadian soft
wood lumber have increased in
recent years primarily because
U. S. timber resources are not
adequate to supply both lumber
and plywood demand.
The paper was circulated as
congressional committees were
about to consider the one lumber
measure which has advanced
closed to passage a require
ment that imported lumber be
marked as to country of origin.
Tacked On
The marking requirement was
lacked onto another bill in Ihe
Senate, despite opponents' argu
ments that similar measures
had been opposed by both the
Kennedy administration and the
administration of former Presi
dent Dwight D. Eisenhower.
It now must he approved by
Ihe House or abandoned by the
Senate so thai a compromise
version of the bill can be agreed
on and sent to the White House.
The requirement itself would
have little effect on Ihe lumber
market, but observers consider
it an opening wedge.

Other bills which have been
proposed in Congress and op
posed by the Kennedy Admin
istration would impose quotas
on U. S. lumber imports or set
other requirements, such as do

would raise the cost of imports.
The measure which seemed to

is an extension of the present
