THE WEEK IN CALIFORNIA
Pennant Winners Make News;
Heat Wave Extends Over State
j By United Press International
I Only a few mild cheers emit
: ted from Dodger stadium in Los
t Angeles when the Dodgers won
their second National league
pennant since they moved from
Brooklyn in 1958.
I But the reason was simple:
tne 56,000 scat stadium was
i empty, except for offices on the
club level where only secre
taries and other employes were
on hand to celebrate.
The news that the Dodgers
were the new champions and
would meet the New York Yan
kees in the World Series was
received by most LA players by
radio and television from Chi
cago, where the Cubs extin
guished hard-pressing St. Louis
6-3 and handed the flag to the
Dodgers..
In a somewhat anti - climatic
meeting a few hours later in
Dodge stadium the new Na
tional league champions cele
brated by humbling the lowly
New York Mets 4-1. The Dod
gers had been in first place
since a game July 2 in which
St. Louis also figured. The
Cards' loss to LA that day hoist
ed the Dodgers into the top spot
that was theirs the rest of the
season.
Elsewhere, there were these
developments:
Heat wave: A heat wave de
scended on the Los Angeles area
and spread into northern Cali
fornia. Temperature records
were broken up and down the
! state. Some schools in the out
! lying areas of Los Angeles,
j where smog added to the mis
j ery of millions, allowed students
to stay home because of the
' heat. An all time high of 111
was registered in San Diego
and Los Angeles suffered under
109 degrees temperatures, the
second highest in the history of
the city. Police halted without
incident a short-lived protest

shipbuilding projects valued at
$45 million were slowed by the
