Jeanne G. I first come alive
in the afternoon and evening.
Alex G. She hasn't had
breakfast with me since the
honeymoon.
Jeanne G. Al and I have
been married eight months. Our
problem is that we're never
sleepy at the same time. He
had me fooled while he was
courting me. Maybe he took
naps or drugs, but he managed
to stay awake evenings at the
atre or watching TV. Now I've
learned his preferred bedtime
is 9 p.m. And I've never been
sleepy before midnight. Natural
ly he's bright-eyed at 6 a.m.,
which is still deep night to me.
Alex G. The only good part
of our problem is Jeanne can
tell me how all the TV plays
I fall asleep at turn out. Other
wise it's maddening. I've ex
cused her from breakfasts be
cause she dragged herself
around like a sleep - walking
zombie. We manage a late
brunch together on Sundays. It's
true she prepares wonderful
dinners for me, but they drag
on. 1 grow drowsy by dessert
time, while she gets peppier.
The Council: No pamphlet on
How to Choose a Mate reminds
folks to ask: "Are you an a.m.
or a p.m. personality?" Of
course it's not as vital a matter
as compatible blood-type com
bos, but it can prove nettling
indeed to be married to someone
who's always full o'pep when
your pooped, and vice versa.
We learn that Sumner Long, the
playwright, made it clear to his
wife before marriage that he
preferred to work from mid
night to dawn, sleep from dawn
to noon. With her OK, he was
able to write, "Never Too Late"
that way, and stay happily mar
ried. Evidently she "adjusted."
Jeanne and Alex can, too. It's
not easy, because these differ
ent tempos are tied up with
basal metabolism and the en
docrine system. Some of us
have quicker furnaces inside.
Others, like Jeanne, take half
a day to warm up. The rap
prochement will never be per'
feet, but it can improve through
effort and tricks for staying
awake longer (Alex), waking up
sooner (Jeanne), and being
good pals for more hours in
between.
