Duncan To Show Kennedy
Features of Rogue Basin
By A. ROBERT SMITH
Mall Tribune
Washington Correspondent
WASHINGTON - President
Kennedy will make an aerial in
spection of the sites of three
new proposed Rogue River Ba
sin dams during his swing
through Oregon Friday, Rep.
Robert B. Duncan said Tues
day. Congressman Duncan said he
plans to fly with Kennedy in
the presidential plane and to
point out the geographic fea
tures of the area. He said tnc
plane is expected to first fly
over the Lost Creek and Elk
Creek dam sites and then head
down the Rogue toward Grants
Pass and finally see the Ap
plegate dam site near the Cal
ifornia border.
All three projects were author
ized by Congress last year for
eventual construction. Duncan's
reason for showing the sites to
the President is his hope for
speeding up construction by se
curing more funds sooner to
do the job.
Indonesian Troops
On Malaysia Border
JAKARTA (UPI) - Indonesia
sent troops. Including army
commandoes, to the Malaysian
border in North Borneo today
and said it is prepared to train
and aid Malaysian rebels.
The official news agency An
lara said at least two battalions
massed on the border of Sara
wak, which became part of Ma
laysia on Sept. 16, are being
held in constant readiness to
face any attack "that might be
launched by the imperialists."
The agency quoted Defense
Minister Abdul Haris Nasution
as saying that Indonesia is pre
pared to train Northern Borneo
rebels and to aid their struggle.
From the Malaysian capital
of Kuala Lumpur came reports
of a mortar attack a half mile
from the Indonesian border in
Sarawak, with shells clearly
marked with the Indone s i a n
army star, and the recall of
Malaysia's defence chief from
Pakistan.
Kennedy's budget this year
asked Congress for $100,000 tj
start planning Lost Creek dam.
Duncan is trying to get Congress
to increase this amount to $230,
000 and to add $150,000 to the
budget for each of the other
two dams.
Duncan said he plans to point
out areas along the Rogue which
suffered damage during the De
cembcr 1955 flood.

De Gaulle To Press
Nuclear Testing
ORANGE, France (UPI) -President
Charles de Gaulle
said today he is determined to
go ahead with nuclear testing.
He hinted strongly he will run
for a second term as president
"since I have the strength to do
so."
De Gaulle addressed a large
crowd in this historic southern
French city at the start of a
five - day speaking tour on the
Rhone Valley.
Despite efforts by local or
ganizations to organize a boy
cott of De Gaulle's public ap
pearances, large crowds turned
out to cheer him.
De Gaulle said France is "in
the middle of tests" necessary
to build up its own nuclear force
and is determined to go ahead
with them, regardless of the
Russian - U. S. nuclear-test ban.
To make this aerial visit to
his home congressional district
Duncan ironically needn't set
foot in Oregon. He must meet
the presidential party at Seat
tie - Tacoma airport because
of the cancellation last week ol
a planned stop at Portland.
Flying south from Seattle, the
big jet plans to fly over the
Oregon Dunes before reselling
the Rogue area. Sen. Maurine
Neubcrger will also be aboard
to help point out with Duncun
the dunes area where both want
Congress to approve a national
seashore park.
Both Oregon lawmakers will
leave the plane at Redding, Cal
if., the President's next stop
en route to stay overnight at
Lassen National park.

VATICAN CITY (UPI) -
New York Gov. Nelson A. Rock'
efellcr, whose divorce and re
marriage caused a political
stir in the United States, had
a secrecy shrouded meeting
with Pope Paul VI today.
Since the Catholic church
strongly opposes divorce, Vati
can sources described the audi
ence as "unusual" and said
there was some consternation
among prelates because t h e
pontiff agreed to receive Rock
efeller. Rockefeller's second wife,
who also has been divorced,
did not attend the audience.
Comment Declined
When Rockefeller left the
Vatican he told newsmen, "I
was pleased to have the oppor
tunity to pay my respects to
the Pope." He declined to fur
ther comment.
Not since Soviet Premier Ni
kita S. Khrushchev's son-in-law,
Alcxei I. Adzubei, saw the late
Pope John XXIII has such se
crecy surrounded an audience.
The Vatican neswpaper "Os
servatore Romano" was asked
not lo mention the fact that
Rockefeller had seen the Pope
Normally, the newspaper pub
lishes a daily list of persons
received by the pontiff.
Photographs Banned
All photographs, even by the
official Vatican photographer,
were prohibited and regular
Vatican reporters who are nor
mally allowed in the ante-chambers
during such audiences
were kept out.
Vatican sources said only that
Rockefeller and two unidenti
fied men went into the papal
apartments at 12:15 p.m. Mrs.
Rockefeller was shopping in
Rome at the time.
Although neither of the Rock
efellers is a Catholic, the Vati
can still takes a strong view
point on the subject of divorce
and remarriage and an unusual
but not unprecedented excep
tion was made for the gover
nor. Rockefeller, a Baptist, was di
