Cloth Hat Becomes
Entrenched Among
Wardrobe Items
. With the upcoming fall Ml'
son, It appears that the cloth
bat has, Indeed, come "ot age"
no longer a "novelty" but
solidly entrenched part of
nan's headwcsr wardrobe.
New fabrics and patterns are
bowing In. The hats are being
finely styled, and many are
made to fully withstand the
weather and to take crushing
without damage.
Band treatments have been
broadened to include every
type of trim in addition to the
usual sell-clotn band.
The cloth hat shapes for fall
are similar to those for Celts.
First in favor is the center
dent, followed closely by the
center crease. Brims take 1
inch as their pivotal point nar
rower for the younger men
wider for the older and more
conservative. Included will be
new versions of the telescope
for men who favor this shape.
Increased Popularity
Notwithstanding the increaS'
ed popularity of the cloth hat
for casual wear, the felt will,
of course, continue to domln
ate the fashion picture in men's
hats for fall.
The trend is to lighter colors,
getting away from the previ
ously prevalent all-dark look.
Grays and browns are clearer.
Dark olives have been bright
ened up to willow. Blue-grays
will be important.
Bands are often lighter than
the body, going so far as to
show white cord on Tyroleans
and outer sports-dress shapes.
Raw-edge brims reflect a
traditional influence, and many
are Vt or Vi of an inch wider
than the extreme M- and l'
inch styles. Otherwise, silhou
ettes vary little from last year,
except for growing Interest in
ninch-front and telescope.
Sports Headgear
In sports headgear, there
much stress on compound col'
orings. All the cloth hat lines
include some lighter shades as
well as the blacks and dark
tones. For real sportswear,
some very pronounced patterns
are being shown.
Dress caps are beginning to
stage a comeback. The impor
tant fabrics are suedes, cordU'
roy and wool.
Fur, of course, both genuine
and synthetic, Is still an Im
portant winter look.

Maternity Wear in
Style With Fashions

signed maternity styles give the

for autumn.
Significant of the increasing
irena to maternity clothes that
are something more than just
comfortable and concealing is
the fact that some too fashion
designers have included apparel
for the expectant in their regu
lar fall lines. Others have turned
their attention to the junior-size
mother-to-be, with results that
will no doubt be welcomed by
today's many younger-than-ever
mowers.
Equally welcome Is the news
that maternity wear is turning
away from "discreet" and of
ten dull colorings, toward the
currently fashionable hues.
Leading reds such as cranberry.
houndstooth checks and bold
plaids, as well as soft browns.
cnarcoal grays, menswear
stripes and herringbones, bright
en fall waiting days.
For the variety that a waiting
wardrobe needs, maternity wear
adopts autumn a layered look.
Most smocKS and jumpers are
made to be worn with other fash
ion ingredients shirtdresses,
snirts, sweaters.
Raincoats Becoming
All-Weather Clothing

look for relaxing at home is a
double-knit slack suit, adorned
with eyelet embroidery.
Lamps for Fall
Have Slim Look
New lamps have a fashionably
slim look. Designs are sleek and
well-proportioned, rarely taller
than 36 or 40 inches, says the
Lamp and Shade Institute of
America, in a survey of lamp
manufacturers.
As furniture trends move to
wards larger and heavier pieces,
often influenced by Spanish
styles, the new lamps are a per
fect way to provide balance.
Shades confirm the move
away from clutter. Most are
slim, deep drum shapes in plain
colors or opaque white. Deco
ration, where it is used, is unobtrusive.
Providing homemakers with
flexibility in lamp choice, tra
ditional styles take on a clean
er look and contemporary lamps
are less aggressively modern In
appearance. Period designs ap
pear in authentic reproductions
for early American or eighteenth
century decor.

affair between the American
woman and garment of leather,
fur and bulky fabrics are mid
heeled, beautifully textured
leather boots, pumps, mocca
sins and oxfords.

or crushed, smooth or suede,
fine or heavily grained, leather
textures spell out the new look
in shoes whether you call it
suburban, sportive, country or
casual.
Boot Leads Way
Standard-bearer of the sub
urban look is the leather boot,
higher and handsomer than
ever. In smooth, grained, brush'
ed and waxy leathers, the boot
and its sister, the boot shoe,
belong everywhere at home,
outdoors, shopping, partying.
Shearling lined, it s a butter
against wintry blasts. Lined in
smooth leather, boots and demi
boots brave the elements or re
lax indoors with equal comfort
and grace.
Among style features bringing
great variation to the boot look
are angled toplines, buckle-and-
strap treatments, gored inserts,
and combinations of leather tex
tures and colors. Leather deml-
boots, ending just at the ankle,
come cuff-appliqued, or laced
up front or sides.
For daytime, footwear is as
diverting as it is diverse. There
are pert waxy leather mocca
sins; smooth leather spectator
pumps, sprinkled with perfora
tions; and grained leather ghil-
lie-ties. These teams up perfect
ly with plaids, tweeds, ghillie
ties and other versions of Uie
suburban look.
Heels Are Mild High
Dress shoes travel down two
paths. One group reflects the
influence of the casual shoe in
its construction and detailing.
A more traditional feminine
feeling is expressed in the sec
ond group, with cutouts, straps,
stripping and up-front detailing
such as buckles and high-rising
tongues. Here the shallow sil
houette predominates, with low
ered sides and backpart.
Whether the treatment is cas
ual or conventional, heels on
dress shoes tend to midheight,
either set back or curved. Fa
vored finishes include smooth,
suede, lustre and patent leather
and reptile.
Shoe colors suggest earth,
stone and woods. Browns and
tans are important in all finish
es, from honey shades through
warm medium browns to the
reddish brown called "Bitters."
Darkened greens and reds are
widely used, and mustard, dash
ed with brown or green, is new
in smooth and brushed leather
and reptile.
Leather neutrals on the order
of putty, fawn and gray-green
add subtle fashion accents to
colorful fall costumes.
Warm, Mellow
Colors in Rooms
After summer's casual out
door mood, rich formality moves
into the home for fall. With
traditional designs coming
strongly to the fore, the look
for homes is elegant but not
overbearing. The dark tones
that once made period rooms
seem gloomy and oppressive
have given way to a medley of j
warm and mellow or bright and
striking colors. i
It's the easy cleaning of to
days fabrics that makes pos
sible a lively use of color, and
the lively colors in turn make
the more-massive furniture ap
propriate for modern living.
Traditional, Victorian, Span
ish-Mediterranean, French
court, French provincial and
Italian designs all have a share
in fall, and in the new approach
to decorating, all mix with each
other and with softened modern
and contemporary.
Perennially popular is early
American, representing about
one-third of furniture purchases.
However, now it's not just early
American it's "New World."
In the category are styles in
spired by the old Shaker furni
ture, as well as Colonial, Fed
eral and Pennsylvania Dutch
styles.
New World furniture and fur
nishings can be either formal or
informal. Shaker styles, for in
stance, are clean - lined and
somewhat influenced by Scanda
navian designs. Colonial reflects
the elegance of Williamsburg,
while warmth and coziness is
chief aim of most of the Penn
sylvania Dutch styles. '
Grown-Up Look Is Popular With Boys
Boyswear is a little boys' best
friend for fall. Fashion-wise, the
trend is to grown-up good looks
in boyswear styles that are rug
ged and right for dress, school
and play.
For "Sunday best," boys will
be wearing classic Eton suits,
smartly styled vest and cardi
gan suits and handsome tweed
coat and cap sets.
The collegiate-look is kid-stuff
for fall, with boys sporting 'Ivy'
suits, button-down Oxford shirts,
and blazer jackets.
Boys can really be boys in
fall's wide wale camel or loden
corduroy jackets, jeans and co
ordinates. Rugged and right for
school or play, corduroy is also
handsome for dress-up in Oliver
inspired jackets with velvet col
lars. The ski-look, in outerwear for
on and off the slopes will be a
favorite this fall. For little boys,
the influence is seen in quilted
jackets with drawstring bot
toms, knit cuffs and collars and
zipper-attached hoods. Also in
the outdoor picture are ski
helmets, stretch pants, pile lin
ings and ski insignias.
Soswear This Fall

Leather or suede elbow
patches, popping up on every
thing from sweaters to coats,
leather or leather-look buttons,
norfolk-belted jackets and woods
man plaid shirts add a touch of
sporty, country casualness to
fall boyswear.
Fashion salutes the military,
with brassy buttoned jackets and
cadet-look sweaters.
STYLING THE FURS
Fur styles stress shape, wheth
er lean and natural or lightly
fitted at front. Capes and cape
effects get attention.
