Brakes Kail Donald Morris
Eccles, 57, of 108 Cottage St.,
Medford, was driving down
Chestnut ave., Ashland, shortly
before 6 p.m. Monday when the
brakes on his car failed. The ve
hicle turned into a private drive
way at the home of Frona Pul
sipher, 610 Chestnut ave., struck
a fence and wound up in a veg
etable garden. Eccles was not
injured, police said.
Brush Fire About a tenth
of an acre of grass and brush
burned Monday night in the
Griffin Creek area, according to
the state forestry department. A
crew was out at the scene again
this morning mopping up. Cause
of the fire was not immediately
known.

ACCUSED OF MURDER A vacationing Glendale, Calif., police
officer captured a 72-ycar-old retired carpenter accused of mur
dering his wife and sealing her body in a wall of their home.
Joseph Lewis, shown in custody, was arrested while waiting
for his car to be serviced. The officer, George Smith, who also
was at the service station, recognized Lewis and placed him

stalled the trial for the alleged
"murder-for-hire" of his heavi
ly insured wife Monday by ask
ing to see a co-defendant's con

in the slaying of his wife, Car

that the co-defendant, Dick W.

A search was under way today
for Terry McGuire, 37, a bank
robber reported missing from
McNeil Island federal peniten
tiary. McGuire, of Clearwater,
Wash., was serving a 25-year
sentence for rohbino a hnnir
at Forks of more than $40,000.
The holdup occurred in 1960
and McGuire began serving
nis sentence in 1961 alter plead-
uiB gumy.
He was missed during a reg
ular cnecK at tne prison at
p.m. Monday.
Pierce county sheriff's offi
cers and FBI agents were par
ticipating in the search which
was centering on the island
proper, located in Puget Sound
near Tacoma. The surrounding
mainland was also included in
the search area.
McGuire was described as be
ing six feet tall, weighing 158
pounds. He was wearing a blue
jacket and blue coveralls with
white stripes. ,
