Governor Has
Audience Slated
With Pope Paul
ROME (UPI) - Gov. Nelson
A. Rockefeller of New York,
his six - nation European visit
scarcely begun, today laced an
embarrassing question by nis 0
vorce and remarriage.
The governor, who was to
meet today with Italian political
leaders, has an audience sched
uled for Wednesday with Pope
Paul VI, and Vatican sources
made no. secret of the fact that
some consternation was felt
over the appointment.
Felt 'Unusual'
The sources said Mrs. Rocke
feller would not attend, but
said some high Vatican prelates
felt it was "unusual" for a man
who had been divorced and re
married to be received in papal
audience, since th Catholic
church does not recognize di
vorce. The problem brought a swift
reaction from Robert McManus,
press secretary to Rockefeller.
"The governor has a number
of appointments with various
people in Europe, including an
audience with His Holiness," he
said. "At none of these meetings
will Mrs. Rockefeller accompa
ny the governor.
"No significance should be at
tached to the fact that she is
not going to accompany him to
the Vatican.
Concern Reflected
McManus' statement reflected
apparent concern in the Rocke
feller ranks over the Vatican
comments. The divorce and re
marraige are highly sensitive
topics in the governor's unan
nounced but evident drive for
the 1964 Republican presiden
tial nomination.
The Rockefeller party flew
in Monday night from Paris. To
day the governor's schedule in
cluded meetings with President
Antonio Segni, Premier Giovan
ni Leone, Treasury Minister
Emilio Colombo, Christian Dem
ocratic Party Secretary Aldo
Moro, and Socialiat Vice Secre
tary Francesco de Martino.

Paul VI has ordered that "great
er liberty" be used in giving out
information on the secret ses
sions of the Ecumenical Coun
cil, it was announced today.
The second session of the
council starts Sunday. Msgr.
Fausto Vallainc, head of the
council's press office, said that
because of the order "we will
be able to give all the substance
of what the fathers say" in de
bate. The meetings will remain
closed to the public, however.
During the first session of the
council the press office gave out
a minimum of information on
what was going on inside the
council hall in St. Peter's Ba
silica. The 2.500 prelates from
around the world were under
threat of excommunication if
they revealed what was said and

Increases Sharply
NEW YORK (UPI) - House

The price of raw sugar in
creased sharply Monday. The
National Sugar Refining Co. im
mediately announced it was in
creasing the price of refined
sugar 25 cents per 100 pounds,
for both industrial and consum
er packaged sugar.
Other refiners were expected
to follow National's lead.
Production of coal in the U.S.

ANTI-FRANCO TERRORISTS SENTENCED
MADRID (UPI) A military court sentenced two anti-Franco
terrorists to prison terms totaling 55 years, government sources
said here today.
The men, both Spaniards, were tried In Madrid Monday in
connection with bombs which exploded in Avalencia, southern
Spain, last December, and In Rome last March.
BEN BELLA THREATENS TO NATIONALIZE PROPERTY
ALGIERS (UPI) Algerian Premier Ahmed Ben Bella threat
ened Monday to nationalize all remaining French property in
the country if France resumes nuclear tests in the Sahara desert.

session was learned, although
it did not come from any "of
ficial" Vatican source.
The announcement of informa
tion came as favorable world
wide response to the pointiff's
plans to modernize the Roman
Curia appeared to add new
strength to liberal prelates at
the council.
The pontiff's announcement
last Saturday that he planned
to reform the conservative
Curia, making it more interna-
tional in recruiting and more
modern in outlook, appears to
have set the tone for the debate
even before it starts.

administration in the Vatican, !
drew some sharp criticism last I
fall from council liberals. They
felt the Curia was too stiff to-!
ward modern realities. i
Pope Paul, in a speech lo ,

ned to change outdated struc-l
tures in the Curia and give it
a more "ecumenical" spirit. In j

Pope Paul also indicated he
was considering taking away
some of the Curia's powers to
leave decisions on some mat
ters up to individual bishops.
In Warsaw, Stefan Cardinal
Wyszynski of Poland said some
Polish bishops failed to receive
passports to attend the second
session of the council.
"This decision of the authori
ties is unjust ... It is a re
striction of human rights and
will leave the impression aboard
that Poland is a sealed prison,"
he said Monday.

PORTLAND (UPH A 63-year-old
woman was bound and
gagged in her home Monday
night by two burglars who fled
with $t00 they found in a radio
after causing heavy damage.
Mrs. Ann N. Greenough said
she came home from dinner at a
resturant and was grabbed by ;
one of the men as she entered i
the house. He had a stocking i
over his face.
"The minute I came in, he
grabbed me and put a pillowcase
over my head. I managed to
peek out a little and could see
him on the floor counting the
money," she said.
She said she was bound and
gagged and shoved into a living i
room chair. She said the bur-!
glars overturned davenports, l
chairs, and ripped up rugs and
pillows. They searched through
all rooms, including the kitchen. '
When they left they also took i
her cigarette lighter,' and house
and car keys. She finally worked :
