Three measures on the agen

Thursday night concerned plans
lo install off-street parking fa
cilities on parcels of land now
occupied by the old Federal
building, Sixth st. and River
side ave., and the Hansen and
Fields buildings on North Bart
lett st.
The council approved some
"minor" amendments to the
leases with Will Hansen and
Harvey Fields, which were sign
ed Aug. 8, 1963.
The group also approved
plans and specifications for the
development of the off-street
parking lots. Bids will be called

the demolition of the structure.
A contract was awarded more

ings. Work is now under way.
Plaque Is Presented
A representative of the Amer

Dunlevy, signifying that Med
ford had won first place for
pedestrian safety in national

no fatalities during 1962, and
this is the second consecutive

award. Dunlevy called the
award a 'tribute" to the work
of the city police department.
In other action, the council

Block 5, Riverside addition.

allow "solid" fences: and do
away with the 20-foot front yard
setback for fences around junk
yards and storage yards with
out regard to whether there is
a building on the premises or
not.

nance to provide that licenses
be issued for a two-year term

now in effect. Charge will be
50 cents for the two-year term,
except for licenses issued for 12

fee will be 25 cents.

Anthropologists
Inspect Dugout
EUGENE - University of
Oregon anthropologists last
week inspected a dugout canoe
recently lifted from the bottom
of Blue lake and put on display
at the Pioneer Museum at the
Lane county fairgrounds.
Examining the canoe were
David L. Cole, curator of an
thropology at the university's
Museum of Natural History, and
Dr. Wilbur A. Davis, assistant
curator of anthropology. Both
are assistant professors of an
thropology. The canoe is not of Indian
origin and was probably made
within the last 100 years, accord
ing to Cole.
The anthropologists based
their opinion on several pieces
of evidence, including the fact
that the canoe was fashioned
with a metal instrument, prob
ably a hatchet, definitely estab
lishing that it was made after
the coming of the white man.
The bow and stern of the
craft are not of a design usually
found in Indian canoes. Cole ob
served. In addition, the log was
only partially dug out and. as a
result, the canoe would not be
stable in the water. Indian can
oes were usually stable, sea
worthy craft, Cole said.
