West Coast Plans
Plane Purchases
SEATTLE West Coast Air
lines expects to exercise an op
tion Oct. 1 to purchase two turbine-powered
F27 Fairchild pas
senger planes from Aloha Air
lines of Honolulu, J. Nicholas
Bez Jr., vice president and as
sistant to Uie president, has announced.
The acquisition will be subject
to approval of the Civil Aero
nautics Board.
"West Coast also Is desirous
of obtaining a third F27, which
would increase its jet strength
to 10 planes within the next few
months," Bez said.
At present WCA operates to
44 points in six Western states
and Canada with a fleet of 7
F27s and 14 DC3s. The two ad
ditional F27s will have an effect
of increasing the overall pas
senger load capacity by 15.6 per
cent when fully incorporated
into the schedule. Each can car
ry 40 passengers in addition to
cargo and cruise about 300 miles
per hour.
The F27s were introduced to
U.S. air travel by West Coast
Airlines in 1958 as the first
American-built jet transports to
enter scneduled service.
