Scorpion Fish Afflicted
With Ugly Appearance
The scorpion fish has an af
fliction he can never outgrow
or overcome it's his appear
ance he looks terrible. If you
saw one of these fish you would
not believe it. If you touched
one, you would wish it had never
been brought up from the bot
tom of the sea where it and its
kin - folk blunder along scaring
the other fish half to death.
It is fortunate for the salt wa
ter fisherman that this repul
sive and highly obnoxious char
acter is confined to the depths
and seldom brought to the sur
face where a horrified world
can see him. No one can say
for sure but chances are these
fish are few in number. Per
haps this revolting character
frightens even members of his
own kind. It would not be too
surprising to find that many boy
scorpion fish are so repelled by
the appearance of any girl scor
pion fish that one or the other
would give up and go away and
hide.
There is no obvious reason
why nature created such a thing
in the first place, or why she
dabbled around with the idea or
why she overdid it by creating
several varieties, some even
more offbeat than the others.

cently a news story told of a
man being bitten by a scorpion
fish, and suddenly the reading
public wanted to know about
this strange fish that bites peo
ple. Scorpion fish don't bile peo
ple, but what they do is about
as bad they sting. The sling
is powerful enough to send the
victim to a hospital. The sting
ing is done by numerous long,
sharp spines that are scattered
over the head and body of the
fish.
for no reason that science
can explain, the head of this
fish is armored and covered
with spines. These, as well as
the spines on the body, can cut
and sting. Actually the fish is
not venomous but infection can
follow the wound. It's hard to
understand why anyone would
want to touch one of these fish.
Its appearance certainly dis
courage any voluntary contact.
Bright Colors
Some of the scorpion fish arc
brightly colored. One, the so
called "rosefish," is orange-red.
This one is thought to bring forth
its young alive, after the eggs
hatch inside the body of the
mother.
The West Indian scorpion fish
often reaches American coasts
and has even been found off
New England shores. This va
riety is handsomely mottl e d
with a bright yellow stomach
which flashes brightly when the
fish is in motion. Viewed safely
in an aquarium, one could al
most say it was a very beautiful
fish; but it's a dangerous love
liness. To the scorpion family of fish
also belongs the lionfish. He
looks as bad as the others, may
be even worse, for he is decor
ated with colorful flaps that
hang around the spines, giving
him a ragged appearance. Just
to be ridiculous, one member of
the repulsives is called "the un
armed" for there isn't a single
spine on his entire body. How
ever, his appearance is as off
beat as all his relatives. Nature
must have been in an ugly mood
when she devised the scorpion
fish.

sales tax?

least one TV set today, close to one billion books are now being
sold each year, twice as many as were sold 15 years ago?
This is a sampling of the statistics included in the l,2fi:t
tables in the mi edition of "The Statistical Abstract of the
United States," just released by the U.S." Department of
Commerce's Bureau of Census. It's the 8 llh edition of Uncle
Sam's Answer Book and as a source of fascinating facts about
our nation and what makes us tick, it is of unparalleled
value.
Consider those eye-stopping figures on our foreign aid since
1945 and you'll see a key to the bitterness of this year's congres
sional battle over foreign aid, The rising disenchantment of the
American voter stems not only from the realization that our
grants and loans have not won us friends.
The rising resistance of lawmakers to the program stems not
only from awareness that unless we narrow the gap between what
we spend abroad and what we earn abroad, the U.S. dollar is in
deepest peril. Behind both attitudes is an understandable weari
ness with an aid program which
totals and goes on and on and on. Behind both, too, is resent
ment over the fact lhat many countries which have become strong
because of our aid are not now assuming their proper share of
the free world's responsibilities. As for the disclosure that France
has received more military aid from us since 1950 than any other
country, we certainly have helped General dc Gaulle achieve the
position where he can sabotage temporarily anyway our
greatest dreams for world unity and prosperity.
Or consider the fact that out of every 10 women who work,
more than six are wives living with their husbands. The contribu
tion of the working wife to the climb in family incomes in our
country has been spectacular. The working wife, accounting for
35 to 40 per cent of the family's total income, explains why so
many families are moving into the $10,000-and-up range. The
working wife explains why increasing millions of American fam
ilies can afford two cars, all desirable appliances, can also finance
their children's higher education, annual vacations away from
home, etc. The percentage of working wives in the female labor
force has almost doubled since 1940.
Or consider the fact that only Nebraska now imposes nei
ther a state individual income tax nor a general sales tax.
This dramatizes the extent to which the state tax take lias
skyrocketed in recent years. The rate of rise in state spend
ing and taxation far exceeds the rate of rise in federal spend
ing and taxation. There is no reversing this trend cither, for
our climbing population will demand services which will keep
state spending and taxing moving up. The only place to whicli
we can look for tax relief is the federal government.
Or finally, consider the statistics on TV sets and books. We
are known the world over as an affluent, materialistic nation and
our TV set ownership underlines this. We are not, though, known
as the avid book-reading society which the figures on our book
buying underline. We are, I submit, a far more complicated group
of humans than our critics think.
