Buy Cranberries
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
Agriculture Department said
today it will buy fresh cranber
ries in an effort to help market
the 1963 crop.
The agency will use funds de
rived from tariffs on imports
of foreign agricultural products.
The cranberries will be dis
tributed for use in school lunch
programs and eligible institu
tions. The commodity will be
purchased on an offer and ac
ceptance basis.
The quantity purchased will
depend on marketing conditions
at the time of purchase, the de
partment said.

three Western states, Kennedy
did better than Adlai Stevenson,

nominee in 1952 and 1956. He
didn't capture a single Western

"It only makes good sense,"

thing if I had a limited amount
of money to spread around."
Humphrey Will Speak
A major talk will be delivered
by U.S. Sen. Hubert H. Hum
phrey of Minnesota. He'll speak
at a $100 a plate fund-raising
dinner Friday night.
But both Miss Redd and Kent
appear to believe the major
interest at the conference would
be centered around a panel dis
cussion titled "Civil Liberties
and the Right Wing." This
panel will form the strategy to
fight the Birch Society.
One of the panel participants
will be California Atty. Gen.
Stanley Mosk, who once said
the JBS was largely "little old
ladies in tennis shoes." Another
will be California Gov. Edmund
G. Brown.
Others on the panel will be
Sen. Gale W. McGee of Wyo
ming, Sen. Daniel Inouye of
Hawaii, Rep. Joseph Montoya
of New Mexico, Rep. Augustus

Lucy Redd, Utah's vivacious
Democratic National Commit
teewoman, expressed concern
about the Birch Society in an
interview.
"In Utah, we've got a real
problem with the Birchers,"
she said. "I call it a sleeping,
state either time.
"Certainly we have a rough
row to hoe," said Miss Redd.
"But we're not counted out by
any means despite what news
media say about it."
Roger Kent, California's party
vice chairman and head of the
Western Conference, said in an
interview that the Democrats
need the West.

Kennedy Believes

ident Kennedy believes '.he na

ing quite well."

ress in school desegregation at
his news conference Thursday. ;
"We have to do better, but I j
think there is some cause for
satisfaction in most of the;
events that happened in t h e
last two weeks," he said. !
Kennedy paid high tribute to
community leaders in Southern
cities where school desegrega
tion has been carried out poace
ably this fall. He noted that
schools in 150 southern commu-'
nities have been desegregated
during the past two weeks.
Some Difficulties
While there have been "some
difficulties," he said, it is "to
the great credit of the vast ma
jority of the citizens and pub
lic officials of these communi
ties" that the transition has
been "with understanding and
respect for the law.
"The task was not easy. The i
emotions underlying segrega
tion have persisted for genera
tions, and in many instances,
leaders in these communities .
have had to overcome their own
personal attitudes as well as the
ingrained social attitudes of the
communities," he said. !
Kennedy did not mention by
name Alabama Gov. George C. i
Wallace, his adversary earlier
this week, nor did he refer to
the disturbances in the wake of
school desegregation in some Al
abama cities.
