Johnson Cancels
Greenland Visit
COPENHAGEN, Denmark
( UPI ) Vice President Lyndon
B. Johnson, nearing the end of
a 15,000-mile tour of Northern
Europe, today cancelled his last
stop a brief visit to Greenland.
A formal announcement is
sued shortly after his arrival
from Norway for a three-day
official visit to Denmark made
no mention of reports that he
was tired out by his strenuous
Nordic tour and was curtailing
his activities.
Instead, the announcement
said merely that "the press of
business in the United States
made it impossible" to go on
to Greenland.
Johnson had been scheduled
to go from here to Iceland and
Greenland Monday before fly
ing home. Instead, he now will
go straight to Washington from
Iceland.
There also was some con
fusion here over whether John
son would cancel previously
scheduled appointments in Den
mark. The U.S. Embassy said the
vice president had dropped an
inspection of Danish navy snips
and a wreath-laying ceremony
at the Franklin D. Roosevelt
Memorial statue from his sched
ule. Both had been set for Sat
urday. CD Funds for Six
Counties Approved
SALEM (UPI) Civil Defense
matching funds have been ap
proved for six Oregon counties,
it was announced today by Ore
gon CD Director Robert W.
Sandstrom.
Under the program approved
by both federal officials and
Gov. Mark Hatfield, the slate
will administer federal assist
ance programs for the counties.
The counties, and the amount
of federal aid granted: Benton
$2,995; Deschutes S5.946; Linn
$3,170; Polk S6.207; Umatilia
$4,000, and Washington $5,20
It was announced earlier that
about $3,000 in federal funds
had been made available to the
state agency for purchase of
supplies and for civil defense
schooling programs.
