small college campus in north
western Illinois, permission was
granted one day to a co-ed to
bring her goldfish bowl to the
Union Raps NAACP
Picketing Threat
PORTLAND (UPI) -Officials
of the Local 8 of the Internation
al Longshoremen's and Ware
housemen's Union Monday
blasted a threat to picket their
headquarters by the National
Association for the Advance
ment of Colored People.
In a statement signed by local
president Charles Ross and sec
retary Art Ronne, the union
said it does not discriminate
against Negroes. It said 11 Neg
roes have been working on the
docks for almost two years.
"These honest Negroes came
down and sought work, not be
cause of the color of their skin,
but as fellow Americans who
needed an opportunity to earn a
decent living," the statement
said in part.
"To arrogantly demand jobs
solely because of race is un
American and contrary to the
principles of Christian brother
hood ... We view the threats to
picket ... as a classic example
of misleading the Negro peo
ple." Circus Employee
Mauled by Lion
DAMASCUS, Ore. (UPD-Bill
Tadlock of Boring was mauled
while watering two lions at a
small circus headquartered
here Sunday night.
Tadlock, an employee of Kra
mien Enterprises, which owns
the circus, was treated and re
leased at the Gresham General
hospital.
Witnesses said one of the lions
reached through the cage with
its paw and that Tadlock kicked
at it. The lion grabbed his right
foot and chewed on it until
screams of spectators drove it
back.
