Berry Picking
Nears End of
Season in Forest
Blackberry picking is coming
to an end after a good season,
according to the weekly recrea
tion report of the Rogue River
National forest.
Picking this season was best
in the Applegate district and
reports from Union Creek indi
cate that some blackberries and
huckleberries remain, but that
they are scarce and very slow
picking.
Berry picking in all four rang
er districts in the forest was
hampered this year because of
late frost, causing berries to be
late in ripening.
Roads leading into the Apple
gate area are all open with
the exception of Elliot Creek
above Park Gulch. The Butte
Falls roads are all open, but
travelers are cautioned by for
esters about heavy logging traf
fic on Lodgepole rd. on week
days. Prospect roads are open
as well as roads into Union
Creek.
Blowdown clearing has not
been completed on some of the
trails at Union Creek area, but
the report indicates that all the
campground areas are open
with the exception of Beaver
creek and South Union creek.
Fishing in the four ranger dis
tricts runs from fair to good.
No reports on hunting in the
Applegate area, but a lot of
shooting is being heard, rang
ers noted. The office is open
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven
days a week and California tags
may be validated. Fishing is
reported as good in streams in
the Butte Falls area.
The lakes in all districts are
open.
Missionary Meeting
Scheduled Sept. 10
Central Point A missionary
meeting is being planned for
Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:45 p. m.
at the Community Bible church,
Fourth and Alder sts.. Central
Point with Dr. Alvin Roberts,
who spent one year in medical
missionary work in Iran, as our
guest speaker.
He will show colored slides of
the work in Iran together with
his talk on the work in that
land.
This is a public meeting.
SCHOOLS WILL OPEN SEPTEMBER 9. MANY CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL FOR
THE FIRST TIME! DON'T LET IT BE THEIR LAST! YOUR CAUTION CAN
SAVE A CHILD'S LIFE ... SO PLEASE . . .
DRIVE CAREFULLY around schools and play
grounds! Be on the lookout for children when
they walk to and from school! Your vacation from
school children is over nowl
BE ON THE ALERT when you are near a school
bus. Of course, they have to obey all traffic rulesl
But, give schoolbusses a break anyway . . . they
carry a priceless cargo!
PARENTS! NEVER STOP TELLING children about
the many traffic dangers! Only then can we hope
to help reduce traffic fatalitiesl One out of seven
fatalities involves a schoolchild! One out of ten
fatal accidents is caused by a teen-age driver!
The Family Council
Editor's note: The r'amllr Counnl consists ot a Judge, a
phy hl.'rttt, three clergymen, thrt.e editors ana a women's editor,
rsrh article la a summary of m family disagreement presented to the
Cr.unrl) Itie Council d?als with problems, major and minor,
4iicountried by guidance eounselora and social workers. Edited by
Helen S. I don't want him to
touch our savings.
Glenn S. We 11 replace the
amount within a year.
Helen S. For four years I've
been postponing the purchase of
wall-to-wall carpeting for our
home- I started saving for it
right after we paid for our furni
ture, but each time our bank
balance says Go, something else
comes up and demands the rug
money. Now Glenn's brother
needs a loan. I say No.
Glenn S. When my brother
was in the chips he promised to
lend a pal $2000 toward opening
up a shop. Meanwhile Clem went
broke. Now the friends turns up,
counting on that promise. We
have the money and can help
Glenn save face. He'll pay us
back gradually and, with what
we can put away ourselves, we
can buy the carpet in '64.

The Council: Just the other
day we came across a strange
request. A magazine writer
asked us to pity the rich be
cause it is hard for them to find
happiness in marriage, since
they can't share many struggles.
bnarlng golf, travel, parties isn t
as unifying, he pointed out, as
sharing long-range goals which
must be saved up for. Well, per
haps. At any rate, there's the
angle for Helen and Glenn. The
joint endeavor, the suspense, the
frustration, and the eventual at
tainment in Operation Broad
loom, may be having a bene
ficial effect upon their marriage.
That's the long view. . . . For

the postponement has saved her
brother-in-law a trip to a loan
shark. To avoid a further de
lay, however, how about signing
a purchase contract in advance,
Glenn, for Helen to hold and
gaze upon?
