On the Air
By ELEANOR WIESE
Tomorrow night will mark
several firsts in television
news coverage. Because of the
increased tempo and com
plexity of international and
domestic news developments,
the TV networks arc extend
ing their evening news broad
cast to one-half hour, with
CBS adding a 30-minute morn
ing news report as well.
The network news depart
ments are not planning mere
ly to multiply the number of
news stories but rather to add
the "why" to the olo jour-'
nalistic ground rules of Who,
What, Where and When.
So much is happening and
changing around t)ic globe -in
politics, economy, sociology
and the sciences - that it is
no longer enough, they feel,
simply to confine a news
broadcast to what has actual
ly occurred; and a mere re
cital of today's primary facts
does not make a well-rounded
presentation of critical news
developments. The news cor
respondents can now analyze
developments icaiiing ui iu
a particular news story and
report on what the implica
tions for the future might be.
The CBS News expanded
schedule starts tomorrow on
KBES-TV. Walter Cronfrite is
managing editor of the eve
ning news at 6:30 p.m., assist
ed by t'ftc Scvarciri, Charles
Collingwnod and Harry I?ea
soncr. Mike Wallace is an
chor man for the morning
news at !) a.m.
A week later on NBC, diet
Huntley and David Brinkley
will begin their daily 30-min-
uMB news coverage.
