MEDICAL HISTORY-Chameli, mongrel dog
at University of Oregon Medical school in
Portland, made medical history last Wed
nesday by giving birth to 14 healthy pup
pies. Litter, though large, was not point
of renown. She is first dog to bear young
and otherwise lead normal life with only
one kidney. Chameli is part of a research
project investigating super-cooling, storing,
and transplanting whole organs. Giving
mother and pups loving care are twins,
Bobby and Billy Day. (UPI)
Widow Testifies
In Murder Trial -
The Dalles -IUPP- The wid
ow of a man who was shot to
rieath last April testified
Tuesday she fled from him to
the garage of Dolphus Baker,
who is on trial for second de
gree murder.
Baker, 53, is charged in
the shooting death of Richard
Bisig, 31, at Rufus 30 miles
east of here.
Bisig's widow, Janice, 22,
was the state's first witness.
She said her husband, who
had hcen gone three weeks
nn a court order, arrived back
1o try to persuade her to re
turn to him. She said her
glasses were broken and she
received a black eye.
Mrs. Bisig said she left on
the pretext of telling a baby
sitter she need not come that
night and that her husband
kept her son, Brian, 2. She
paid she drove to the home of
a deputy sheriff who was
gone, so went to Baker's ga
rage. The shooting occurred after
Bisig came to the garage.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert
McCrca, from Lane County,
asked Mrs. Bisig: "Are you,
yourself, glad he's dead?"
"Yes," she replied.
LIKE A MONSTER
Nuneaton, England -(UPD- A
rlriverless 37-ton bulldozer,
apparently started by acci

building site, knocked down
several trees, destroyed a rock
garden and chased a car be
fore coming to a halt in a
ditch a half-mile from its
starting point, 'it was just

film," said Thomas Aucetl.
Try and Stop Me
By BENNETT CERF-
BEFORE the immortal Italian star, Eleanota Duse would
consent to tour America, she demanded a clause in hex
contract calling for an even temperature of 72 degrees in
her dressing room. An
ingenious master car
penter exclaimed, "I fix,"
and fashioned a ther
mometer that registered
exactly 72 degrees come
blizzard or heat wave.
"Wonderful country,"
enthused Duse before
sailing for home. "It renn,
it snow, it frizz, it blow
but de termometer, he
is always seventy-two!"
(As an afterthought,
she remarked, "Funny, I
sink, how much hotter
seventy-two ees in Chicago than it ees in New York?')
Newly arrived in Camp Devens, a draftee from Harvard re
ceived this letter from lus mater: "Dear Sebastian: Now that
you are on your way to being1 a general, I trust that you will
arise on time every morning- so that the other young- gentlemen
in your set will not have to sit at the table and wait for you to
come downstairs before they can begin eating their breakfast."

CORNER 10th and CENTRAL
out, Gov. Mark Hatfield said
Tuesday.
Hatfield told United Press
International "the Republi
cans have any number of can
didates who can displace
Kennedy."
He said all Republican
hopefuls should enter next
spring's presidential primary
races and "take their
chances." He said the pri
mary races will give the peo
ple a voice in selection of
candidates.
He denied that New York
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller
could be written off as a Re
publican presidential candi
date in 1964 because polls
now show his strength has
slipped.
"I don't bclicvp any man
can be written off until the
final bell has sounded. Rocke
feller is still in the race, and
while he may appear behind
at present, he still can come
out on top," Hatfield said.
When asked to comment
on Arizona Sen. Barry Gold
water's apparent strength in
the south, Hatfield said Re
publican candidates should
have national appeal. He said
the battle should be fought
on the basis of principle and
issues, not on sectional differences.
