a 4-hour show featuring
words and incidental music
from the plays of William
Shakesceare. music from
operas, ballets and symphonic
poems based on his plays, and
Elizabethan songs.
"Romeo and Juliet," as
taped by this year's Ashland
Festival company under the
direction of Robert B. Loper,
will be the highlight of the
program at 9 p.m. Leading
performers are Marian Hailey
as Juliet, Richard Sterne as
Romeo, and Stacy Kcach as
Mercutio. This one-hour ver
sion was edited by Andrew
C. Love of the National
Broadcasting Company, which
broadcasts portions of the
play nationally on its radio

Supply of Rubber
Ashland - Factors affecting
both the short-term and long
term trends in the demand for
and the supply of the world's
natural rubber have been re
searched in a study of the
natural rubber industry by
Dr. Man He You, Southern
Oregon college economist.
According to Dr. You's find
ings, the United Stairs and
Western Europe can be ex
pected to continue to exercise
a great influence In the future
rubber market, since they ab
sorb nearly 50 per cent of
the world's natural rubber
production. Additionally, the
United States is expected to
play a vital role as the major
producer of synthetic rubber
- considered to be a critical
factor in determining the fu
ture demand for natural rubber.
Assuming an equal abun
dance in the supply of both
natural and synthetic rubber,
the consumers' preference for
either Is expected to he gov
erned by the factors of Initial
price, the stability of the
price, and the quality of the
product.
Cost Could Decrease
By ulilizing new techniques
of replanting rubber trees
and developing better varie
ties, and the wider use nf
chemical stimulation to rub
ber trees, it was indicated that
production costs could be de
creased enough to meet the
competition from synthetic
rubber.
If the Industrial production
increases by figures of 75 and
85 per cent of the average an
n u a 1 production Index of
1058-B0, in the United Stales
and Western Europe respec
tively, by the year 1980, the
natural rubber demand can be
estimated to be about 3,400,-
000 long tons for the world
as a whole. Of this amount,
approximately 3,200,000 long
tons can be expected to be
provided by Southeast Asia.
The projection of natural
rubber production Indicates
that Southeast Asia can he
expected to produce about 2,
600,000 long tons of natural
rubber in 1980, which is
equivalent to about 92 per
cent of the predicted total
world production in 1980, 2,
900.000 long tons. It is con
cluded that the means are
adequate to meet the aggre
gate demand for natural rub
ber, currently available for
increasing the productive ca
pacity of natural rubber, pro
viding, of course, that extra
ordinary efforts to expand the
productive capacity are put
forth under relatively stable
political conditions.
