Loses Weight Wondering Why
West, More and More, Discovers
He Watches Less and Less TV
ml
Washingtoh-fflPII-More and
. more I found myself watch
ing television less and less.
And thiswor
ried me. Oth
er people
were watch
ing television
as much as
ever. Why
was I differ
e n d? Was
there same
thing wrong
west with me? For
weeks I went arounnd brood
; lng about this. Meanwhile, I
: began losing weight. Became
' pale and listless. Tongue
coated. The way I always get
when I'm brooding1 about
something, i
Finally I asked Dr. Swiz
; zle about it. Dr. Swizzle said
' I should try to analyze what
; was estranging me from tele
' vision. He said that if I
understood the problem it
might make me feel better.
I did and I feel better al
ready. Not first rate yet,
but better.
The Trouble
It seems that I got along
fine as long as the networks
were bringing television into
the living room. The trouble
started when they began
bringing the living room into
televison. .
Looking back on it, I think
the first symptoms occurred
with a program called "Cha
rade Party."
We were playing charades
about five nights a week
then. On the sixth night we
would turn on the set and
there would be people flay
ing charades on television.
I have a mental block
about what happened the
seventh night. Perhaps that
is just as well.
After that came a program
called "Open End." People
sitting around yakking, yak
king, ynkking. Spilling cof
fee and getting cigarette ash
es all over everything.
Like Neighbors
It is true they were impor
tant people, but it wasn't
much different from the
nights we had the neighbors
in.
I think that must have
been when I began getting
television co n f u s e d with
reality.
Then the commercials
changed. Or some of them
did. They began using real
live people instead of ac;ors.
People just like the folks
next door, which is saying a
lot.
Once or twice I thought I
caught a glimpse of my wife
standing by the washing ma

nounccr how good the soap
was. It was kind of eerie.
I might have survived all
of that, might have stayed
glued to the tube, except
that this summer I tuned in
on a new program. Bless my
soul if they weren't showing
home movies on television.
Home movies, the scourge
of civilization. Home movies
being piped right into my
own living room.
I don't trust television
now except when there's a
ball game on. Fortunately,
some of my best friends are
not ball players.
