Carpet Styles for Fall Will Be in Mellow Mood With Rich Colors

Continuine is a strong inter

carpets and rugs with a bold
look; varied combinations of
color and texture fnr
approach to pattern; carpets
ana rugs in new coordinated
groups; a wider availability of
custom designs with unlimited
possibilities in design, size or
shape.
American manufactu r e r s
will literally roll out the red
carpet this fall, highlighting
new styles in this color fam
ily. "Feminine, but not frilly"
might be the keynote for these
introductions.
In this view are mellow,
deeper hues such as ruby and
raspberry reds - and in some
style groups, rich pink with
an old-world look of ele
gance. Several new varieties
of blue will also be seen, rang
ing from delicate pastels to
brighter blue and. rich royal
or clear turquoise shades.

look) further support this
theme.
"S o p h i s t i cated country
style" is another trend noted
in the new collections. Boldly
textured tweeds, dense twists,
striated and heavy-looped tex
tures and intense colorings
will enhance decorating plans
which call for heavy, simply
styled furniture and warm
color schemes.
Here the gold and greens, in
almost endless variety, are
important along with tawny
tones, such as henna and rus
set, and nut-brown tones. The
latter have usurped some of
beige's long time popularity,
and in the green family soft
shades of clear, true greens
look especially new.
Wide Rang of Patterns
Classic patterns, including
florals and panel or block de
signs, will again be seen in
carpets, and the pattern choice
is even wider in rugs.
There are strictly contem
porary stylings in stripes, bold
bursts of color and geometric
designs. Subtle flower and
leaf designs are interpreted in
a variety of ways, often in a
rug border, as well as oval
and swirl motifs.
Authentic clan tartans show
up in one new rug group, a
pattern based on a finely
wrought lavalier in another.
Patterns to complement Co
lonial furnishings, including
an authentic reproduction of
a New England hooked rug
and a braided rug design, will
be offered in rug sizes as well
as carpeting.

a homemaker to put her own
personal stamp on her selec
tion of new carpets or rugs.
Several manufacturers have
broadened custom-design ser
vices, offering shoppers a
chance to create their own de
signs or select any color, tex
ture, size or shape on special
order.
Even without special cus
tom orders, however, shoppers
this fall can vary their choices
within new collections. Car
pets and rugs can be co-ordinated
from groups with a cen
tral color theme; area rugs
can be ordered with or with
out fringe or special border
designs. There are new de
signs in hand-carving for rugs
cut from thick, plush-pile car
peting. New shapes are avail
able in area rugs and a num
ber of sizes other than those
generally considered "stand
ard." Good news for young home
makers - op-any homemaker
who wants a bright new ac
cent in her home - are in
triguing area styles at budget
prices.
The old "scatter rug" gets a
new design boost, from em
bossed textures to interesting
patterns. Some of these dis
tinctive styles, in small sizes,
will be available at less than
$5 retail - a half dozen would
find many uses throughout the
home and scarcely touch the
budget.
The same smart styling is
carried through into larger
sizes and a variety of shapes
- rectangular, round, square,
oval. Further emphasis on
bold design is seen in dense,
heavy rugs meant for long
term use, and in new carpets
which lend themselves beau
tifully to rug-size use.
Cotton and rayon have been
used to advantage in the
small, colorful accent rugs,
since these fibers can be color
ed and styled economically..
Wool, nylon and acrylic
fibers are all seen in the new
qualities designed for wall-to-wall
installations or long-lasting
rug use. Also making their
debut this fall will be addi
tional carpet styles in polypro
pylene fiber, the most recent
continuous - filament fiber de
developed ' for carpets and
rugs.
Zany Shifts Are Popular With The Younger Set
The younger set is due for
more shifty looks.
Colorful and zany or de
mure and tailored, the new
shifts are ideal for gals to
wear at teen gatherings.

Machine Dyes Shoes
To Match in Minutes
Science has overtaken fash
ion and produced a machine
with artistic talent built into
it. Women all over America
will be able to have fabric
shoes professionally dyed to
match any of 1,140 colors, in
ten minutes with this new
Color -Mate computer whose
color formulae is dispensed
by the machine.
Color is mixed to - order
from recipe codes, by easily
flicking dials, providing cus
tomers quick accurate color
matching, for fabric shoes and
handbags, on textured fabric,
peau de sole or satin.
The Color - Mate machine
looks like a soft drink dis

reservoirs of color formulae.
breaking the ice, according to
the makers of Ampex tape
recorders. Invite guests to
bring along a musical in
strument and record home
style music for immediate
playback. With 34 million
musicians in the U.S., there
should be no shortage of
talent.
When what goes in the mi
cro comes out the speakers,
the party will be off to rous
ing success. . Then shift to
tapes of pop music for danc
ing. The group may discover
that the fun-filled variations
of recording its own music,
including solos by vocalists,
can be almost endless. So are
the selections of shifts, ac
cording to Swirl, the makers
of Model Coats.
Newer versions of the shift
feature short or long sleeves,
no collars or shirt-style col
lars, fabrics of easy-care cot
ton or imported silks, youth
ful designs from flowers or
pussy cats to more sophisti
cated Ivy-League patterns.
Most shifts remain knee
length but some descend to
the ankle. Many come with
matching belts which can
double as head bands.
Detractors and devotees
have had a field day since
the basic shift was originated
in Florida. Critics brand
them "tents" or "house
coats." But gals of all ages
seem to love them and they
are the hottest news in
leisure-wear. .
For teen-agers, the appeal
stems from comfort and ver
satility. Shifts can be worn
around the house, for sight
seeing, for visiting. And, tak
ing a tip from models who
wear loose wraps between
changes, some gals find shifts
just right for "what to wear
when you're deciding what
to wear."
Phoenix Police Hold
Two in Robbery Case
Phoenix, Ariz. -IUPB- Two
suspects In a Portland, Ore.,
holdup were arrested, here

Detectives identified them
as William Kilmon and Frank

Phoenix. Police said they are
charged with armed robbery
of a Safeway store in Port
land Aug. 11.
They were held on $5,000
bond for Oregon authorities.
Classic Bool Makes Comeback
Fashions, particularly shoe
fashions, for the college man
have gone through quite a
cycle in the past decades.
From the 1930's to the pres
ent day, variations of the
moccasin, the oxford and the
boot have been the most pop
ular footgear for college men.
The current fashion for
campus wear is an ankle-high
variation of the classic boot.
In the past decades, the
three basic shoe fashions have
alternated style with com
fort and health. For example,
in the thirties and early for
ties, the huarache, a soft,
woven leather moccasin, was
popular. This shoe, although
it appeared to be comfortable,
actually offered practically
no support for the foot. Its
follower, the loafer shoe, gave
a little more support and was
crafted of a sturdier leather.
Tired feet got another help
ful boost when the saddle
shoe became popular. The ox'
ford-type shoe offered better
support and comfort, and
soon found favor with young
college students too. The pop
ular saddle shoe still is a
favorite with the high school
and college crowds.
"It is so necessary for col
lege people to realize the im
portance of properly con-
structed and well fitted
shoes," says Dr. William M.
Scholl, world-famous foot au
thority. "Too often comfort
imd foot health are forsaken
for the fad of the moment.
The current fashion for an
kle-high boots combines stylo
and comfort, and should re
sult in healthier and happief
feet."

Kennedy Backs Up
Test Ban Proposal
Washington (UPD President
Kennedy backed up his argu
ment for a test ban treaty
Tuesday by citing .a report
that Utah Infants have been
exposed to a possibly danger
ous level of , radioactive
iodine.
At his news conference,
Kennedy said the report was
a "matter of concern" but
added that findings in the re
port were not unanimous. .
However, he said "it does
tell us that it is desirable to
get a test ban." - .;
Nautical Look
Is New, Nice
Crisp fall weather this year
will give, the outdoor gal a
fine chance to show off the
new "layered look" in fash-ion-and,
if she's nautically in
clined, an unusual opportuni
ty for leisurely boating on
uncrowded waterways.
Boaters generally haul in
the anchor and head for in
doors after Labor Day, but
this year hold off drydocking
an extra few weeks, advises
McCulloch Corporation, the
outboard motor manufac
turer. With most vacations over
and school back in session,
lakes and rivers become al
most secluded; there's more
room for fun.
When underway, the culturally-minded
gal can really
shine in a turtleneck sweater
under a "Picasso." Two jack
et models, designed by the ar
tist for White Stag, feature a
1924 surrealistic pattern and
one taken from a 19S5 poster.
Made of vinyl-covered cotton,
the all-weather jackets come
hooded, with drawstrings and
front snaps.
Another, a lightweight ny
lon pullover jacket, features
a large zippered pocket across
the front. The hood pulls
snug for those nippier days.
The bulky sweater is still
very much in vogue, and its
warmth is important, but if
spray strikes, it can create a
problem. Not so the jacket!
Capris are ideal to com
plete the boating ensemble.
Wool and cotton are popular,
and when combined with
easy-care dacron, perfect.
Color combinations for
sweater, jacket and capri
pants range from conserva
tive black and white to stand
out oranges and yellows.
Boating fashions should
compliment the figure along
the tapered slim line. Keep in
mind, though, the idea is to
be free for action.

in a logging accident, near

Cornish was a bucker for
the Wiley Logging Co. of Mar-cola.
STACKED FURNITURE
There seems to be an end'
less array of styles in stacking
furniture, and there will be
many more new models this
season. Massive pieces with
an oriental flavor have ap
peared, and these have more
of the look of built-ins than
the usual room-divider look
of slacking groups.
