8 B WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 21. 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON 'Casual Elegance' Is the Keynote This Fall in the Fashion Field There's a fresh, stimulating approach to suits, this fall. It is certain to delight wom en who like the ease of sports clothes but are reluctant to Watches Today In Many Shapes Fine watches today are just as much jewelry creations as they are quality timepieces, and they come in more shapes, sizes and finishes than ever. Today's new watches. styled for fashion appeal and built to give years of carefree performance, make time beau tiful to behold. Thanks to the ingenious, ncss of today's designers, watches come in many shapes besides the round and square: there are marquise, octagon, tear drop, pearl, oval, clover- leaf, circle - in - a marquise and diamond. In addition to ' white gold and yellow gold, mulli - colored cold is in great demand and finishes include Florentine, mall and polished as well as combinations of ' these. For added jewelry distinc lion, many of the new watch es have beautiful woven mash bracelet-type bands. To add sparkle and glamour lo the watch face, the multi-faceted crystal is a popular feature. Bracelet watches, cleverly concealing the watches them selves, are fashionable every where, while diamond watch es have an appeal of their own that makes them partic ularly desirable. Watch bands, too, have taken on a fashion importance of their own, and the latest ones are extremely thin, of tapered mesh, giving almost a "solid gold" look. With the fascinating array of new walch bands available, there is no reason lor an elegant watch not to have a walch band that enhances it. Pearls, Diamonds Popular Jewelry Cultured pearls grow stronger in their fashion im portance every day, and now the larger and rarer pearl is in the fashion spotlight. Dou ble choker and opera length necklaces of impressive-sized pearls create an unusual ef fect and add interest. The convertible necklace, an opera length that breaks into a choker and bracelet at will, is winning many new ad mircrs. Pins, bracelets and rings featuring pearls and accented with rubies, dia monds, emeralds or sapphires, are extremely popular. Pearl necklaces of all kinds have universal fashion appeal, an attractive combination be ing a double choker worn with a longer necklace for a "full neckline" effect. Diamond jewelry, ol course, is ageless in its beau ty and appeal, with diamond pendants, pins and earrings more dazzling than ever. The various cuts of diamonds oval, marquise, pear and em erald, as well as brilliant have each taken on Individu al fashion importance. Diamonds are being accent ed with romantic colored pre cious stones, including rubies, emeralds and sapphires, cre ating an aura of elegance that is truly breathtaking. The settings are light and airy, with a minimum of gold showing, and for added spe cial effect different cuts of stones are used. ty;v'mmli "t SLEEP WEAR - Bell bottom pj' are the newest in the fall collections of slccpwcar. This pair in 100 per cent Enka nylon, is designed with a Hue- ci-type printed top, softly gathered neckline and raglan bouffant sleeves. Fashioned ky Flair. wear them in town. The new suits, many with matching, sleeveless wool pullovers, or bright contrasting silk or jer sey blouses, are easy and re laxed. Casual, indeed, arc their raglan or balmacaan shoul ders, small notched collars and air of simplicity. Not so casual, however, the soft, dressmaker elegance and vast attention lo detail. "The fall '(13 vintage of suits," predicts the National Board of The Coat and Suit Industry, "will have an hon ored place in the wardrobes of mothers and daughters, alike. Suits combine fashion with function for fashion-conscious women of every age." Careful seaming is used to effect the figure - skimming, gcnlle suit shapes. Thought ful of comfort, indeed, were the suit designers in fash ioning many with pliant shoulders and slim, easy shap ing. Long Sleeves Sleeves are a cover story in themselves. Longer and slimmer, they make a wel come come-back after seasons of exposed forearms. Even more effective with shirtwaist cuffs, they are an important feature of the citified sportive look. Interesting buttons of gilt, crochet, passementerie and leather often bulky and predominant point up the simple lines. Pockets, some hidden, some bold and flap ped, lend drama. The globe - trotting habits of designers show up in the suit influences: the fisher man's shirt of Brittany with its pullover look, the garden er's smock of the Netherlands with fly front. With careful tailoring and cut, they achieve sophistication and poise without losing any of their original charm. Military in feeling is the cape - suit, a jacket with cape sleeves, a collar that stands up crisply. ''here is so much news in su.t jackets that skirts are slim and simple in cut. "No news is good news," however, for according to the Nation al Board of the Coal and Suit Industry, "slim skirts are popular with a majority of women that is if they are not lo slim for easy mobility." ''Easy mobility" that is the keynote of the new suits. Appropriate in town, perfect for travel, a well - groomed look for the suburbs that fash ionable suburbanites have long advocated. New Fabrics New fabrics tic in perfect ly. They are richly textured and tweedy in wonderfully blended color or in mono tones. There is heightened di mension in tweeds for a soft, lush surface. Among the under -coal suits are those with fisher man's jackets, with casual shirtwaist collar and cuffs . . . the over-blouse type, too, with two - piece dress look, the fly-front, newly interesting. Longer Jackets Winter - weight suits fea ture longer jackets reach ing to finger-tip. Often stop ping just short of being full fledged coats. Sometimes, they are unfurrcd with chin deep collars. Generally, they ward off winds with collars and cuffs of beaver in black, mocha or natural; mink in all tones from dark ranch to sil ver pearl, flattering lynx, fish er, fox and for the luxury minded, sable.
